Description: This color educational film is about Aviation Machinist's Mates, who are United States Navy aircraft engine mechanics that inspect, adjust, test, repair, and overhaul aircraft engines and propellers. No copyright but this is circa the late 1940s or early 1950s. Title: Aviation Machinists Mate (:06-:17).A worn airplane, a Douglas SBD Dauntless Scout Bomber, is being wheeled in to a hangar for repair. The propeller mechanic puts a hoist on the propeller. The plane's engine is removed. The carburetor mechanic starts working. Two mechanics look at pieces and use screwdrivers (:18-1:31). Three men carry a piece and start repairing the plane. A mechanic is crouched working on the bottom of the plane. The other two men are working on the top. A female machinist works on the engine. A propeller is placed back onto the front of the plane by the propeller mechanic. The wheels come out of the plane and work ad the plane hangs in the hangar. Two women clean air speed indicators (1:32-3:13). A mechanic places the air speed indicator into the control panel. The plane is outside on the tarmac. A pilot climbs into it. The propeller turns on. A plane flies through the sky. A man puts a headset on and uses a radio to communicate. Engine control panel board. A machinist's mate assist with the men who are backing up a plane. A battleship at sea. A mechanic looks over a scout plane, likely a Vought OS2U Kingfisher, next to the propeller. Another plane next to it is also being worked on. A man climbs down a ladder. A plane is stationary and the propeller is going. It flies off the ship (3:14-5:36). End credits (5:37-5:50).

[Music] as important to the Navy's air arm as The Men Who pilot the planes are the aviation machinist mates The Men Who keep them flying here is the Scout bomber coming in for repairs all mechanical parts will be handled by the five Specialists who hold the rating of Aviation machinist mates while other parts of the planes are being repaired the propeller mechanic one of the five specialists in this rating will straighten this bent prop so it will again operate at terrific [Music] speeds as the plan's engine comes off another of the five Specialists the carburetor mechanic takes [Music] [Music] over keeping the carburetor clean and adjusted to function perfectly requires constant attention by skilled mechanics [Music] all men who wear the propeller and wings of the aviation machinist mates study theory of flight and principles of airplane construction whether it's the assembling of a plane or repair on its many parts they are well qualified to handle the work making adjustments on the landing gear and installing gas tanks of self-sealing rubber are routine duties for these men this looked like a big job for a wave but here is an aviation machinist's mate who has been well trained for Navy Duty she can make any repairs or adjustments the engine [Music] requires any resemblance of this repaired prop to its former bent and crumpled state is not a coincidence it is the result of the exacting work done by the propeller mechanic hydraulic mechanics are trained in that special field widely used in the Naval Air arm when a flyer needs these under his ship in landing position they have to [Music] work instrument mechanics do Precision work on delicate aircraft instruments working on this turn and Bank indicator is like working on a fine watch the skill that goes into this work may win an air battle or save a pilot's life and some of these air speed indicators actually register up to or beyond the speed of sound [Music] Aviation machinist mates refuel and handle planes on the ground after repair jobs they test the motor's operation and accompany pilots on test [Music] flights the board four engine planes an aviation machinist mate serves as flight engineer from this panel he controls fuel mixture low spot drainings oil consumption checks lowering and raising of wing tip floats and many other checks on engine performances this Aviation machinist mate is acting as plane director he is in charge of directing the moving of planes on the carrier's Flight Deck the aviation machinist's mates serve at air stations ashore on carriers at sea or may serve on sea plane tenders or Cruisers many get Duty on battleships which carry observation planes to spot their gunfire the responsibility is great for when an engine fails the plane fails [Music] when this sea plane is catapulted into the sky with tremendous force a few seconds of mechanical failure on the plane would mean [Music] disaster Aviation machinist mates are the men who give power to Navy wing a [Music]
