In 1780, thirteen year old Andy Jackson and his older brother Robert join the South Carolina militia in guerilla action against the British and are subsequently captured. Mrs. Jackson obtains her sons' release in a prisoner exchange, but Robert dies shortly thereafter from smallpox, contracted in captivity. Following Robert's funeral, Andy's mother also dies of ship's fever as a result of nursing prisoners in British prison hulks. The young orphan follows his mother's parting words, which guide his character as seventh president of the United States.
