Cut off from the mainland of Georgia by swamp and sea, St Simon's Island was, until recently, a haven for independent negro communities with a life and language of their own. Spirituals can be heard as they were sung a century ago. 'YONDER COMES DAY' and 'BEFORE THIS TIME ANOTHER YEAR' are presented as examples.
