Description: This black and white film is one of the episodes of "Yesterday's Newsreels", an early 1950s TV show made from the General Newsreel collection. It features nine segments of historic highlights. Wings of Commerce (:28). In 1919, John Alcock and Arthur Brown make the first non-stop transatlantic flight in a modified WW1 Vickers Vimy bomber. Others follow suit (:29-1:10). Children crowd around and watch a barnstorming exhibit (1:11-1:40). In Paris, open-cockpit passengers are flown to London in a De Havilland DH9B (1:41-2:12). In 1921, passengers board larger, enclosed planes, which then are able to carry baggage (2:13-2:40). On May 2, 1923, Lieutenants John MacReady and Oakley Kelly complete the first non-stop transcontinental flight across the U.S. (2:41-2:58). In 1927, Charles Lindbergh is shown with his Spirit of Saint Louis. (2:59-3:10). A group of boys holds model airplanes (3:11-3:24). Clarence Chamberlin, backed by Charles Levine, flies non-stop from New York to Berlin in a Bellanca monoplane (3:25-3:45). A Dornier Do X was a flying boat (3:46-4:26). 1937, the Pan American Airways Sikorsky S42 Clippers make flights to China. Shown aboard are people dining at tables and using a makeup vanity (4:27-4:55). An American Airlines and a Canadian airliner use jet power (4:56-5:26). Mrs. Atlas? 1929 (5:42). In Austria, a woman lies on the ground and various cars run over her (5:43-6:12). Lie Detector Frees Man 1922 (5:42). A man who spent 12 years in jail is freed after passing one of the first lie detector tests (5:43-6:45). Personalities (6:47). 1921, Teddy Roosevelt’s grandson rides a horse (7:52-7:14). 1920, actress Grace La Rue and Hale Hamilton are shown (7:15-7:35). 1946, financiers Thomas Lamont and Martin Egan return from Japan (7:36-7:53). Fireworks Explode (7:56). April 3, 1930, The Pennsylvania Fireworks Display Company factory explodes, killing and wounding people, and destroying houses and vehicles (7:57-8:57). Free Gas 1924 (9:00). At Turner Valley Alberta Canada, a man fills his container from a pool of refined gasoline and pours it into his gas tank using a funnel (9:02-9:34). The Big Bell 1930 (9:36). The 20-ton low C bell is hoisted into place at Riverside Memorial Church on Manhattan Island (9:38-10:25). Fashions of the Day 1936 (10:27). A group of women use vibrating belts, sit on a rolling machine, and using a wiggling machine at a fat reducing salon (10:29-11:06). Sports 1935 (11:08). [Music] television highlights of the news of yester year [Music] it's 1919 and fighting in France halted 8 months ago so Britain's John Alcock and Arthur Brown will take this converted Army bomber on peaceful and historic flight across the North [Music] Atlantic success of Alcock Brown inspires flights in other giant planes near Milwaukee Wisconsin big Pullman of the air is Christen for for her maiden voyage and one more one-time bomber Roars into peacetime Skies airplanes and Pilots are still pretty much Freaks and novelties in years just after the Armistice here in Houston Texas big crowd of curious is attracted by Air Force veterans and pioneering Airmen on national barnstorming [Music] tour on plane like those which Saw Service in World War War one and sold by government as Army Surplus Daredevils thrill gabing populations with stunting in the sky but the plane too excites American Youth across the Atlantic Europe's Most enterprising Airmen launch some semblance of air travel between London and Paris in open cockpits passengers are lifted from ordinary Open Fields and flown across the channel in flimsy and slow-moving craft but it's one of Man's first attempts to put a device of playboys and Daredevils to commercial use the flying machine is suddenly a long way from [Music] Kittyhawk soon cockpits are covered for comfort of passengers but still most commercial planes are small then planes designed to carry bigger loads cut cost per trip it's 1921 and passenger list is now longer than list of crew [Music] then planes still bigger carry not only passengers but their baggage too as flying becomes more practical every day it's now May 2nd 1923 and in San Diego this giant fker is being heavily fueled for lieutenants John mccrady and Oakley Kelly at start of History making transcontinental flight next day they finish flight to New York non-stop but great greatest single contribution to advance and popularity of Aviation is made in May of 1927 by 25-year-old Charles A Lindberg and his Paris hop to every youngster in the world Lindy is the hero of Heroes and playing pilot out modes playing war or Cowboys and Indians here are Airmen of the future and here's thrill packed finish of 1927's second most important flight it's June 7th and Clarence Chamberlain with backer Charles LaVine has reached Berlin after journey of nearly 4,000 miles
