Description: Episode 34 of the "Yesterday’s Newsreel" film series offers the viewer "television highlights of the news of yesteryear" by providing vintage clips of famous people and events from the first half of the 20th century. This episode opens with a look at the "Forbidden City of Tibet" from 1923 (mark 00:30) and the first images ever captured from that land, including Thubten Gyatso — the 13th Dalai Lama of Tibet — at mark 03:50. "Gold" takes viewers to the 1920s gold rush in Gilbert, Nevada starting at mark 04:06, followed at mark 05:38 by a look at a 1934 tale of a trainer of such caged beasts as lions and tigers. Personalities of 1938 (mark 06:25) include Douglas "Wrong Way" Corrigan (who famously made a nonstop flight from New York to Ireland as part of a "navigational error") and dancer Evelyn Law. "The King Is Dead Long Live The King" (mark 07:37) recounts the 1934 death of Albert of Belgium and coronation of Leopold III, while the 1930 unveiling of President George Washington’s "head" at Mount Rushmore is shown starting at mark 09:20, as we also see sculptor Gutzon Borglum and look at a rendition of what the monument originally was to look like (mark 10:10). "Fashions of the Day" for 1920 are revealed starting at mark 10:15, followed by a 1936 sports highlight (mark 11:00) of Rudolf Caracciola’s victory at the Monaco Grand Prix. "Yesterday's Newsreel" was a short-lived, early TV show syndicated by ZIV-TV in 1948. The show features footage from the defunct General Film company library.

television highlights of the news of yesteryear [Music] [Applause] [Music] first pictures of the Forbidden City Tibet Asia's land of mystery photograph for the first time in 1923 this is the Rorick expedition which set out from America they climbed the king of eggs and 2/3 mountains which bring a territory whose customs and people had never been recorded pictorially beyond these mountains lies Lhasa built in the 17th century reached in 1904 by a British military expedition dominated by China which lies to the north Tibet proclaimed independence in 1913 and here near the city of Qom bum is enacted a ceremony thousands of years old unfolding of the tapestry of Buddha extremely religious Tibetans embrace lama ism an outgrowth of buddhism and shamanism one out of every six native to the priests and rites reminiscent of both early China at American Indian traditions or frequent ruling Tibet is the Dalai Lama the living Buddha all power civilian and spiritual is vested in him [Applause] Jeanne Lam who made these historic pictures turns his camera on the soft lick of jakar in north to bet [Music] here is the patola Calais of a llama built in the early 1600s but a modern Oedipus later used as a model for the motion picture Lost Horizon into the forbidden city of Lhasa comes the expedition and then a closer view of the patola which is to be visited in hope of photographing the Dalai Lama [Music] [Applause] no motion picture camera had ever before in here these are first films of ancient prayer wheels spun by natives in their worship outside the patola is a perpetual prayer wheel spun by water power the Rorick expedition catches la mayest since striking holy dances superstitious the Tibetans seek to ward off evil this is a young Buddha this Cyclops is to scare trouble among unusual masks is this war monster Lamas wear these and dances honoring their leader who will be person to receive homage at the stairs leading to the patola and banner signal and down the steps comes a messenger from the Dalai Lama a huge parasol shields him from the Sun and from the camera as he comes to witness the ceremony women are not permitted to participate from a balcony they see their men in ancient rice professor Nicholas Rorick who led the expedition never gave up hope of photographing the high Lama at close range and after the ceremonies you are watching now permission was obtained to bring the camera inside the walls of the patroller [Applause] the Supreme Lord of the land of Tibet master of the mystic country which still scorns Western civilization this is the Dalai Lama goldrush at Gilbert Nevada here is the city that sprung up in the middle 1920s when use of a gold strike drew thousands in a mad scramble to stake claim initial strike was reported by the three Gilbert brothers for whom the town was named and early estimates indicated that over 20 million dollars in gold was in the Nevada Hills not since the days of 49 when California called the gold seeking citizenry at the country was there a rush like this one promise of rich rewards kept men panning digging exploring always with the hope of duplicating the strike made early on the morning of January 2nd by the Gilbert brothers every inch of territory adjacent to the Gilbert mine was explored but results were negligible only Hermann Gilbert who helped locate the last folk mine was happy the Gilbert's found small nuggets this way by panning their discovery resulted in the construction of this crude mining shaft in hunt the last hope mine paid off but it was one of the few that did disappointment came to many in Gilbert Nevada but not to these Gilbert brother bTW and the beat these are pictures of Clyde Beatty the Lord of the Nobel ions and tame Tigers all in a day's work BT's entire equipment consists of a whip a chair and a blank cartridge gun then I saw him just at each other a mass of scars and bruises with hundreds of big cats since 1923 Edie works on the theory that one deserves another quite a few [Applause] July 1938 Douglas Corrigan flew the wrong way to Europe but a year later he does things the right way it's Corrigan meeting his in-laws just before greeting is bride-to-be it seems like all San Antonio Texas came over to see doc and the new mrs. Corrigan for enroute to the airports while honeymoon in Doug's plane well he's heading the right direction this time you're watching a girl who really had a kick on it and made New York worship at her feet she's evident law who broke in September 1921 in a show called two little girls and blue and kicked the roof off everything with the George M Cohen Theatre [Music] while Evelyn law danced President Harding was about to sign a joint resolution of Congress declaring peace for Germany and Austria three years after World War one you've heard about Evelyn though and a long limb of the law [Music] funeral of Belgium's Albert first who defied the Huns in World War one it's February 17 1934 and the beloved leader who held off Germany long enough for France and Britain to mobilize defenses is born to a last resting place Albert's after Belgium's fall moved his government to France where he continued to fight [Music] at the funeral Albert's oldest son heir apparent Leopold with brother Charles and Italy's Prince summer so prepare to pay their respects world-renowned dignitaries include the grand duchess of luxembourg president Lebrun de France and Bulgaria's King Boris as well as the Prince of Wales inheriting an unhappy land from leopold ii albert was crowned in december nineteen nine and then by personal effort and public-minded endeavor brought Belgium New Hope and happiness the United States joins in its recognition of the gallant leader later Leopold's son of Albert rides to Parliament House to take office as the new king his queen the former princess Astrid and little princess Josephine come to witness the coronation of Leopold 3rd following age-old tradition the king is dead long live the king it's 1930 and scope with boots and Borglum is about to inspect first of the three piggies and about what War Memorial in the heart of South Dakota's Black Hills there it is the 60-foot head of George Washington three other units for the follow-through Jefferson Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt to be honored in this huge congress approved project on July 4th this American flag will be removed in unveiling ceremony 2,500 a present at Mount Rushmore at that time and they wait for first official view of the memorial and there it is honor to America's first president who is to be joined November 20th 1941 by Thomas Jefferson Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt it's a 1920 bathing suit fashion show this must be where the term fancy pants originated what the well-dressed wading champion were wear nothing like satin and brocade for a drift I mean a dip sweet simple and corny we'll look who's here Neptune's granddaughter compute if you go for the Clara Bow type I guess this is down to the Seas and hit racing at wanaka it's april 1936 and 18 of the fastest auto drivers in europe race through rain-drenched Montecarlo streets in a dash for the world famous Grand Prix turning tires costs fountains of water into the air as the race is on 200 miles of danger in this classic here's the first accident Joey's your own Frances champion crashes in making a turn watch closely there's a pileup coming very nicely let's get back on the road drivers fights kids and continue in their classic contests around picturesque monte carlo only nine of the cars that started the race are still with it but they're staying mostly bunched near the finish a last mile speed up by Rudolf Caracciola at driving a Mercedes wins in three hours 49 minutes - and for ten seconds [Music]
