Description: In episode 38 of the old TV show "Yesterday's Newsreel", viewers catch up on news in Turkey, California, Indiana, and more. The episode begins with aerial footage of Constantinople (Istanbul) and Sultan Ahmed Mosque (or Blue Mosque). Mehmed VI climbs into a carriage and is driven off, ending his rule as sultan (01:10). Kemal Pasha (Ataturk) and his wife walk from a building. Turkish troops train for maneuvers. Turkish troops carry their injured comrades during post-war fighting with Greek forces (02:15). Allied warships wait in the harbor of, and U.S. sailors escort Greek refugees onto the ships. U.S. sailors escort Greek refugees to Allied ships. Women’s rights activist Halide Edib Adivar poses for the camera (03:22). Viewers then see some of California’s crazy vernacular architecture buildings that house hot dog and ice cream businesses. One is shaped like a boot from a nursery rhyme, while another is made to look like a polar igloo. The segment on personalities of 1925 features an all-orphan orchestra in New York with teacher Ted Lewis, Gertrude Lawrence posing with a dog (05:10), and Raymond Duncan (Isadore Duncan’s brother). John Dillinger smiles in the Crown Point, IN court room (05:58). FBI agent Melvin Purvis gets into a car following the death of Dillinger. Dillinger’s casket is put into a hearse and hauled away to his sister’s home. Crowds wait outside the house and throughout Indianapolis to watch as the body is moved to its final resting place at Crown Hill Cemetery (07:25). Next, viewers see women dancing on the deck of a Hudson River steamer in 1930 with New York City in the background (07:48). Commander Alger H. Dresel stands as he waits for the maiden flight of the USS Macon (ZRS-5) in 1933. The dirigible takes off from Akron, OH. Footage shows inside the ship, as crews walk on the catwalk and eat a meal. The Macon is moored at Lakehurst as the new Naval Air Chief Admiral King watches. Fashions of the Day shows off headdresses from 1927 Paris. The episode concludes with footage of a 1920 women’s rugby game between an English team and a French team, as well as footage of the 1930 Epsom Downs race, where Aga Khan’s horse, Blenheim, makes a come-from-behind final sprint to win the race. Halide Edib Adıvar (Ottoman Turkish: خالده اديب [haːliˈde eˈdib]; sometimes spelled Halidé Edib in English) (11 June 1884 – 9 January 1964) was a Turkish novelist, nationalist, and political leader for women's rights. She was best known for her novels criticizing the low social status of Turkish women and what she saw as the lack of interest of most women in changing their situation.

sèvres sign a central power in World War one Turkey has been reduced to a petty state mohamad six titular head of the fallen Ottoman Empire is first to feel the power of a proud people Turkish Patriots reject the treaty a Nationalist government is in and the Sultan of Turkey is out [Music] their land partitions parading Turks demand the better peace the future governor-general Bey warns against violence while all Constantinople hails the government that is all by and for the Turks nationalist leader is Kemal Pasha her face unveiled the Vishal's wife signals the modernization of an ancient land foot soldiers and cavalry joined the growing nationalist movement and Turkey prepares to defend or regain territory lost by the Treaty of sev mounted Turkish troops trained for mountain warfare and Kemal Pasha now Ataturk watch his mountain maneuvers Turkish troops dig into awake Greeks invading land awarded them by treaty fighting is furious casualties hi but Turkish troops repulse invading Greeks in action the threatens new war of worldwide proportions Orthodox Greeks protest Turk violation of the peace through Constantinople streets pellets of the Greek Orthodox Church deride Turk tactics but Turkey claims that she was made to sign the treaty by force and by force she will write that wrong allied warships stand in the harbor of Constantinople in the interest of a live government send capital in the city streets British troops bring order to chaos a citizenry that is up in arms calms down but British and Americans convoy Greeks through streets that are hostile US sailors escort Greek refugees to the safety of neutral ships while behind them enemy turks battle on to win back some of the land at lost in war greece gives up in lasagna line in 1823 a new treaty makes concessions to Turkey the New Republic freedom comes to Turkish women - here's leader halide hanim and her husband no veils for women of the Turkish Republic the Turkish Joan of Arc and her husband enjoy equality now turkey's first woman army officers be meddled pratima haneun soon women won the right to vote the dead empire became a living republic and war in Turkey was another victory together for the benefit of New York Animal Hospitals on stage or Gertie sure looks good Isadora Duncan is equally famous brother Raymond in New York City in 1930 the people of India object to attacks on salt and Duncan says tax collectors may be the salt of the earth but there's tax free salt in the sea well anyhow here's Raymond Duncan [Music] [Music] yet and the daring John Dillinger its 1934 and the fun is almost over for John Dillinger in Crown Point Indiana courtroom sheriff Lillian Holly gets a laugh from the otherwise sinister king of criminals he soon makes his famous wooden gun escape but public enemy number one is heading for a wooden box ruthless and heavily armed John Dillinger and company terrorized the nation for years in Chicago FBI bullets cut him down in Washington federal agent Melvin Purvis who led the hunt declares the case of John Dillinger his clothes in death Dillinger as as famous as in life here his body leaves a Chicago funeral flower for The Dillinger farm in Moore's very Indiana and thanks to his sisters home in Maywood the criminal pays the price of crime for all his daring Dillinger is no match for death [Applause] at his sister's home in Maywood dillinger lies in state and morbid mobs gather for a last look at the man who made a career of crime yes Dillinger is dead following simple ceremonies clouds still wait outside the house [Music] in rain-swept Indianapolis streets curious onlookers await the funeral cortege in Crown Hill Cemetery the crown prince of infamy John Dillinger goes to rest all dances on deck it's the late nineteen thirty and aboard a steamer of the famed Hudson River daylight chorus girls mixed pleasure with practice for a Broadway show this sort of thing would have shocked the river planted Popeye in naval crews tried four million dollars worth of lighter-than-air craft on test John to Lakers New Jersey the Navy has new wings aboard ship flying sailors see what propels the new giant of the sky cruise can't walk over clouds nudging along at 50 knots the crew eats heartily and well sister to the ill-fated Akron the Macon heads for its mooring Don over Lakehurst the trial flight is over the test is passed by special cable the Macon is moored tail swung into position and 105 persons aboard see the Macon safely to earth built to cruise 10,000 miles without refueling she's the pride of the Navy and proudest of all as the new naval air chief Admiral King disaster finally dooms dirigible but in 1933 the Macon makes home [Music] [Applause] Paris headlines 1927 that evening cap certainly sparkled plenty she's proud as a peacock injustice bullet Betty how would you like to sit behind these heads of the movie a nest of beadwork in her hair those aren't earrings they're flying platters these engineering projects are just the thing to wear when you wash your hair and can't do a thing with it vanish skyscraper Aspirin rugged girls play rugby crushing city in Paris October 1920 girls from England wearing striped blazers and Union Jack's get set to play French rugby players it's an all-girl show and both teams are honored for victory he's all for France teams are a feel for the starting whistle it's a tense moment for the crowd play is underway in England boots the ball downfield it looks like a score the crowd wants a score and it's in their final count a one to one time it's Derby time had Epsom Downs June 18th 1930 entries include the alga cons secondary an eighteen to one shot given no chance by British books and they're off to a fast start and Blenheim is lost in the pack rounding the first turn the leaders hugged the rail in the field spreads out rounding the turn into the stretch and Blenheim is moving into third it's the long gallop home and Blenheim still hangs back as the finish near then on the outside of the track Blenheim makes his bed he's moving up he's driving hard he's closing in he's second and still pounding now he's in the lead and winner Blenheim the champ with owner Hong Kong [Music]
