Description: This black and white film is one of the episodes of "Yesterday's Newsreels", an early 1950s TV show made from the General Newsreel collection. It features eight segments of historic highlights. David Lloyd George 1915-1923. England’s Prime Minister is shown giving a speech in 1915 footage. George decorates women war workers with medals. 1919 Versailles. George stands with Orlando of Italy, Clemenceau of France, and Wilson of the U.S. A mob storms George’s home in London as Bobbies push them back. 1921. George meets with Irish representatives. David Lloyd George relaxes by golfing, fishing, and shown with his wife and daughter. 1922. George attends the peace conference in Italy. 1923. After resigning, George meets with New York Mayor Whalen. A parade in Philadelphia is held for George; Freedom Hall is shown (:07-3:58). Prohibition Agent Captures Rum Runners (1925 and 1928). A woman wearing a 1925 flapper band powders her nose. She waves to a clipper ship whose men debark with rum. The woman is actually Marshall Parker, who removes his disguise. 1928. Rum runners produce a smoke screen as they race in a vehicle away from agents on motorcycles. Rum bottles are removed from hidden compartments in the car. The smoke screen mechanism is shown (3:59-5:23). Personalities. 1923 Pennsylvania Governor Gifford Pinchot is shown with his wife and making a speech. 1922 Mary Pickford receives a giant bar of chocolate with her picture on it. 1920 President Taft golfs with philanthropist businessman Nathan Straus (5:24-6:44). Grain Elevators Become Raging Infernos Early 1930s. Chicago grain elevators burn as raging infernos in chilling winter cold. Fireman with fire hoses shooting water are silhouetted against the smoke. A fire truck is parked and continues to spray water on the wreckage, causing it to freeze on the smoldering structures (6:45-7:52). Showers for New York’s Kids 1920. New York Mayor Highland has pipe showers erected in city streets for poor children to cool off under. A band plays (7:53-8:25). Aviation 1930. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lindbergh pose in front of the Lockheed Sirius low-wing airplane. They board and take flight (8:26-9:54). Fashions of the Day 1922. The Miss Washington D.C. contestants and their mothers are shown, all sporting 1922 hairstyles and clothing (9:55-10:32). Sports. 1921. Benton Harbor, Michigan, the House of David commune’s semi-pro baseball team is in spring training. The male players all have long hair. 1924 Olympic backstroke Gold medalist Sibyl Bauer sets a record in 1922. Fellow Gold medalist Aileen Riggin practices a springboard dive (10:33-11:52).

David Lloyd George England's wartime Prime Minister its 1915 and with British troops battling German invaders in France David Lloyd George seeks re-election to Parliament's House of Commons as Chancellor of Exchequer he prevents collapse of English credit in 1916 he's prime minister as he decorates these women war workers in Britain in 1919 lloyd George's at Versailles with Orlando of Italy Clem also of France and Wilson of the United States to establish terms of peace at conference which drew blueprints for ill-fated League of Nations leader of one of four most powerful nations on earth Lloyd George is strong voice in meeting in Palace of Versailles [Music] but trouble at home in midst of peace conferences calls England's Prime Minister back to London post-war uncertainties have caused unrest in ranks of Labour and British Empire's on verge of economic paralysis more than 1 million English workers are unemployed and hundreds would storm lloyd George's home but for intervention of London bobbies there's trouble with Ireland too as political differences lead to open and sometimes bloody rebellion [Music] with trouble all around Lloyd George attends memorial services for Irish leader John Redmond as do several of the younger members of Great Britain's royal family it's not until 6th of December 1921 that Lloyd George is able to offer satisfactory terms to Irish representatives then trouble with Ireland is over taking well-earned rest here's the prime minister who saw England safely through danger of economic disaster one world war and then another economic and political upheaval on vacation he's a prime minister enjoying the sport of presidents here he is with his lovely daughter enjoying an English outing and mrs. David Lloyd George is taking it easy too 19:22 lloyd george's still at work in April and May he is in Genoa Italy for important political and peace conferences with senior fakta and others here Lloyd George help search for solution to problem of Red Russia war reparations was still a worldwide headache and the economy and politics of countless nations hinged on what was attempted here October 19th 1922 Lloyd George resigns and as former Prime Minister of England comes to New York Grover Whalen greets him for all Manhattan annex head of world's greatest Empire tours world's largest city in November he visits nation's capital where famed Washington conferences are in session and peace promoting nine power and four Power Packs are being written by world's most influential nations here Lloyd George sees his nation aid in bringing about the worldwide era of good feeling and prosperity and then in visit to Philadelphia the one time head of world's largest Democratic monarchy comes to birthplace of history's most powerful Republic with solemn all a great man inspects the monuments to American freedom with Mayor Moore of Philadelphia standing by among America's landmarks of freedom as Independence Hall and named David lloyd George's hallmark of the great in Britain here in Gloucester Massachusetts it's 1925 and bootleggers and road runners are in their glory hardly this beauty likes her booze right off the boat or maybe it's the Portland she wants anyway our heroine got her a man we mean got her men looks as if she has them under her spell not they're under arrest because our heroine is really city marshal Parker and here's marshal Parker out of disguise as prohibition agent [Music] near Richmond Virginia in 1928 forties have tough time catching rum owners who employ smokescreen as a dinner baiting capture combination of smoke from car exhaust and dust from road or bird blind police officers giving chase but perseverance wins and that's not Jarrah preserves he's found the spirited chase results in capture of plenty of spirits inspecting confiscated car prohibition agents demonstrate device which screens rumrunners car and spoke very clever these bootleggers but where there's smoke there's fire and in this case it was fire water [Music] here in 1923 our governor-elect of pennsylvania gifford pinchot and his wife and here in 1933 and show us again governor of Keystone State as he urges all state governors to back plans of freshmen President Franklin Roosevelt governor gifford pinchot since 1922 and here's something sweet for America's Sweetheart yes it's Mary Pickford in Hollywood in 1922 and SC hook struttin has just presented her this giant bar of chocolate as sweet to the sweet during candy makers convention big man between big jobs it's 1920 and this hard swinging golfer is none other than William Howard Taft 27th President of the United States he's ex-president here and not yet appointed Chief Justice of US Supreme Court his golfing partner is another great merchant philanthropist Nathan Straus in the rough only for the moment Taft accepts President Harding Supreme Court appointment in 1921 and remained the head of nation's highest court until 1930 when illness forced his retirement [Music] [Music] it's early 30s and fire turns these Chicago Illinois grain elevators into raging inferno hundreds of Windy City's firemen battle roaring blaze but flames aren't their only troubles it's seven below zero and water turns to ice making crystal castle out of flames in ruins danger of injury or death under falling walls as well and high winds caused drafts that keep flames going for many hours Holocaust was caused by spontaneous combustion blast and day following explosion elevators and grain our total loss cost of conflagration 1 million dollars fire still flickers behind walls of ice 24 hours after first alarm but flames are eventually frozen out it's 1920 and hot summer days will no longer be burdened to these youngsters in New York's watering tenement streets city's mayor Highland as chief speaker at ceremonies bringing relief to poor children in form of showers erected in neighborhood streets now every day in the week will be just like Saturday night [Music] here at Burbank California mr. and mrs. Charles a Lindbergh America's flying as couple get set to test new low winged Lockheed which carries uncommonly heavy load of gasoline its fifth of January 1930 Charles and Anne Lindbergh are here practically newlyweds the former and Morrow having married the famed flyer only two years previous to this flight [Music] following policy of flying everywhere together in all kinds of planes America's most romantic couple take to the air an experimental flight this trip is not as spectacular as Lindy's leap of the Atlantic just three years ago but purpose of flight is just as important to advance of aviation [Music] lyndie once thrilled the world by making the greatest solo flight in history now his small and lovely wife flies with him as he blazes another pioneering pathway through the skies as Lindy proves low-wing plane with heavy load of gasoline will fly and with that proof aviation experts can go ahead with long-range airships for a 1930 Colonel Lindy and his lady shoved away beauty contest yes for the nation's capital they're looking for miss Washington DC of 1922 an optimistic judges expect to pick an Atlantic City entrant from among 22 candidate even the contestants mothers addressed fit to kill and ready to kill judges all except its beauties mother that is she's Evelyn C Lewis Washington's most ravishing beauty and second most ravishing in 1922 miss Lulu McGrath it's 1921 and at Benton Harbor Michigan here's famed house of David baseball team in spring training to make matters of even more historic importance here are first films of players letting their hair down in flowing locks here are manager and captain intra team practice Pitts long haired pitcher against batter needing haircut - looking for strikeout here's like trying to find needle in haystack but all beards aside this semi-pro team is good record to beat Riggin its 1922 and at Long Beach New York Olympic backstroke champions Sibyl bower betters both Aileen Reagan and world mark as she backed strokes to victory in smooth waters of Long Island pool miss Barr was also olympic backstroke champion in 1924 miss Sibyl Bauer backstroke queen of early twenties beaten and backstroke miss Reagan will not be bettered in mid Olympics diving championships one of greatest fancy divers of all time miss Reagan here repeats her fancy diving conquests of 1920 Olympics [Music]
