Description: This black and white film is one of the episodes of "Yesterday's Newsreels", an early 1950s TV show made from the General Newsreel collection. It features eight segments of historic highlights. The Hope for Peace 1919-1945. 1919. President Wilson is greeted by General Pershing in France for the Paris Peace Conference creating the League of Nations. Also present in the Hall of Mirrors is England’s Prime Minister George. The four leaders stand together: Wilson, George, Orlando (Italy), and Lamaze (France). The Palace of Nations nears completion. Sir Eric Drummond writes invitations for the 1920 inaugural meeting. Wellington Koo arrives from China. Prime Minister Paderewski arrives from Poland. Delegates in 1920s top coats, tall hats, and canes leave the building. Benes (Benesh) represented Czechoslovakia. 1931, Japanese soldiers fire artillery in Manchuria. 1932, league delegates visit the battlegrounds in disputed territory. Japan’s Matsuoka arrogantly walks out of the assembly. Mussolini stands at a window, inciting the crowd below. War footage of tanks and soldiers on horseback is shown at Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Leader Haile Selassie I appeals to the League of Nations. Hitler, dressed in military uniform, addresses a military crowd. Nazi troops march into Czechoslovakia with Hitler standing in an open tank. The seats at the League of Nations are empty. 1945, San Francisco, the United Nations are formed under President Truman. Country flags fly together, including Russia (:10-5:21). Freedom for Pope Pius XI 1929. Pope Pius XI is carried through the streets at St. Peter’s Basilica. The well-groomed Apostolic (Papal) Palace gardens and fountains are shown. An artist sits and paints a view of the grounds (5:23-6:18). Personalities 1924. Democratic Committee woman Anna Olson and Secretary of the Treasury William McAdoo are shown together (6:20-6:47). French tennis star Suzanne Lenglen and American Helen Wills are shown (6:48-7:08). Al Jolson, wearing a monocle, tips his derby hat to reporters while giving an onboard interview (7:09-7:30). Manila Ravaged by Fire 1937. Bamboo roofs burn in Manila. Some houses are carried to safety by large groups of people (7:33-8:25). King Zog’s Sisters 1938. The three sisters of Albania’s King Zog I visit New York. Two are dressed in exotic fur coats (8:27-9:10). Aviation 1928. The British Cierva Autogiro gyroplane is filmed crossing the English Channel (9:12-9:50). Fashions of the Day 1921. A 1920s ensemble includes a large brimmed hat trimmed with ermine tail. A checkered two-piece suit is topped by a large fox stole. Another modeled is a black seal coat with a white ermine collar and cuffs. Two 1920s afternoon tea dresses are modeled with low-waists and scalloped trim. A one-shouldered 1920sevening gown is topped with a large fur cape. Another 1920s evening gown has thin straps and sheer fabric at the waist that could be lifted. A one-shoulder glittery 1920s evening dress features long fringe (9:52-11:02). Sports 1920. Lou Gehrig smiles at Chicago’s Wrigley Field June 26, 1920 as a 17-year old player for The School of Commerce playing Lane Technical. The crowd cheers as Lou hits a grand slam (11:04-11:49).

[Music] it's January 18th 1919 and with din of World War 1 finale still ringing in his ears Woodrow Wilson arrives in France for peace conference at Versailles General Pershing greets him and here's Lloyd George of England big voice in gathering of 70 delegates of 27 nations assembled in Hall of Mirrors big pour of conference our George Orlando of Italy Lamaze or France - Wilson result of conference is the league and here in Geneva the Palace of Nations nears completion so that those who believe the peoples of the world can live together may have a home where they can plan and work together [Music] sir Eric Drummond first Secretary General of League sends out invitations for inaugural meeting first session is held November 15th 1920 and here arriving at conference hotel quarters is Wellington ku for China and delegates from Poland is famed pianist premier Paderewski with Paul Heyman's first president initial meeting is success as delegates bow for Fisher Barnes and Lord Cecil lead many in voicing opinion that League will keep world at peace and here years before name of Adolf Hitler was even known as Benesch of Czechoslovakia but in 1931 League of Nations deals with first of series of disasters in the Far East Japanese soldiers launched their Manchurian invasion overrunning Chinese strongholds and blasting Chinese cities into submission China appeals to the lead for health and in fall of 1932 league delegates visit battlegrounds in disputed territory then October 2nd report to league that Japan is fully at fault but Matsuoka Japan's leading delegate at geneva states his country does not agree with ruling and Japan not only refuses to abide by league's decision but walks out of the assembly look at the faces around the retiring Japanese do they reveal what's coming well the jut jawed face of this man foretells the future in defiance of League orders benito mussolini calls for italian conquest of Ethiopia and return of Italy to the gold and glory of empire [Applause] Mussolini's men crossed the Ethiopian border and they div 1936 occupy Addis Ababa thus bringing victorious end to war of cannon and tanks against cloth plant natives on horseback [Music] League sanctions were powerless to prevent war and League sympathies whereas nothing to Ethiopia's emperor haile selassie as he hopefully brings his case before the Geneva Assembly first its walkout by Japan then war by cocksure Mussolini and the League of Nations quavers foreboding Lee then one Adolphe shickel Gruber leaves Germany's Nazi Party under swastika symbols and the pony name of Adolf Hitler and defies the League of Nations once again there still no shooting and World War two is just a beer as delegates hear that Germany has broken relations with the league it's walk out far more serious than Japan's for now three great nations have defied the Assembly's power in direct opposition to League of Nations please nazi troops cross-border into Czechoslovakia and Hitler himself smilingly joins the Bloodless offensive it's just 1939 and where are the brilliant hopes for peace in Geneva still with the ghosts of Woodrow Wilson and his dead dream of a war --less world this is the death of the brave assembly in dying days of 1939 Nazi Germany opens World War two and this is what becomes of the gallant League of Nations but out of the ashes of hopes that are destroyed new ones arise in shadow of San Francisco's Golden Gate with Wilson's dreams of 1919 world leaders of 1945 form the United Nations old League of Nations power is handed to new generation now our names are not Wilson George Shore Clemenceau but Stettinius and Truman of the United States and there's hope that history will not this time repeat itself but will improve by the failures past weakness wounded the League of Nations that conflict killed but there is strength in the United Nation it's 1929 and sliding of Lateran agreement between Italy and Vatican City has ended more than 60 years of imprisonment for temporal head of Catholic Church across plaza st. peter's basilica pius xi blesses his followers and then vacations at papal palace in hills outside of Rome nor Pope has seen these lovely lawns and Gardens since heather Catholic Church voluntarily imprisoned himself in Vatican in 1869 in hopes of forcing Italian government to sign controversial pact of peace now with disagreement settled at a papal state has ever since come here for a few weeks of well-earned escape from stern duties at Vatican City [Applause] here in Minnesota in early 1920s our mrs. Anna Olson Democratic Committee woman and William McAdoo secretary of the Treasury under Wilson mrs. Olson was Speaker at Jackson Dave dinner in 1920 McAdoo relinquished his office in 1919 to then-senator Carter glass yes France's most famous woman tennis star Suzanne Lenglen at height of her career almost unbeatable in France in England from 1920 to 1925 miss Langdon turned professional in 1926 that's Red Grange on the right with Suzanne who rule the tennis courts then came Helen Wills under Derby and behind monocle it's Al Jolson giving reporters a laugh on returned from England one al even in pre Sonny Boy days of 1927 was theater packing star on both sides of the Atlantic yes this is early chapter in the Jolson story [Music] it's April 7th 1937 and wind fan flames lick through bamboo walls and past groups of hundreds of Manila homes those who have time and enough friendly neighbors literally pick up their houses and carry them beyond the area of danger but not too many natives are as lucky as this in stricken area 25,000 are homeless and one person dead scores are injured our equipment is inadequate that a lot this rooster cares this is Manila 1937 which five years later is threatened with fire again bus added thunder from bombs of the warring Japanese it's 1st of March 1938 and three charming sisters have recently married King Zog of Albania a much heralded visit to New York left-to-right the princesses are reduced by albania's minister in search of relaxation and fun Kings three sisters took care of several matters of state as royal representatives of Albania during free week visit here they met with Mayor LaGuardia in New York President Roosevelt in Washington and the Girl Scouts [Music] channel crossing at London Airport September 18 1928 inventor pilot juan de la cierva prepares to fly his autogyro from across the English Channel it's first such venture for plane of this type and Sierra's ship is accompanied by commercial plane for inventors plain as no radio hours later cierva lands in Paris with flight a success 16 years later alive bombers crossed the channel by the thousands the occasion d-day [Music] [Applause] modeling in the long-ago let's look at this gaudy 1920s ensemble that large brimmed hat is trimmed with ermine hail this checkered two-piece suit has cholera third check the paid for this was big dude he is black filled skin coat with ermine collar and cuffs let's not talk about the price this is what the well-dressed damsel war key time in the early twenties another afternoon outfit was this puppy sleeved low-waisted gunnysack with glamour he dressed only one shoulder for evening no doubt to have a cold one ready for a chance meeting with some more yes this was worn by milady on her evening out and she wasn't to show good friendship with our southern neighbors inspired his creation featuring a Spanish or even if she walked away from you she leaves you gasping well the glitter of the dress does anyway stepping-stone to stardom this is Lou Gehrig and this is Chicago's Wrigley Field June 26 1920 with 17-year old Lou Gehrig and lineup as New York's high school of Commerce clashes on the diamond with Lane technical of Chicago and intercity championship goes to commerce hi as Lou now hitting mere single later blasts ball out of park for grand slam Homer yes Lou hit them hard even five years before he launched careers pride of the Yankees and hit the road to baseball's Hall of Fame [Music]
