[Music] television highlights are the news of yesteryear president of prosperity mayor governor vice president then chief executive of the United States 29th man in the White House Calvin Coolidge here in Plymouth Vermont Independence Day 1872 Calvin Coolidge is born his home is in rear of this country store as a boy this is the school in which he learns his ABCs his college immersed here he studies law after graduation in 1895 he practices law in these Northampton Massachusetts offices in 1910 he moves into Northampton City Hall as mayor he is now a husband and father of two boys John and Calvin Junior them in 1919 he's governor of his state but fate has bigger things in store for Calvin Coolidge first stole the Troublesome and bitter thing strike of returning soldiers for promised jobs post-war depression grips the nation there are more workers than work and plenty of trouble brewing till governor Coolidge walks calmly out of executive mansion in Boston to dawn working clothes and with typical Yankee humor shows there are jobs for all willing to dig for them tension eases but there's more serious trouble ahead in Massachusetts capital Boston police walk out on strike helpless unprotected a city is at the mercy of unhampered hoodlums governor Coolidge must act and does State Militia pour into frightened Boston order is restored the strike fails and Calvin Coolidge wins national prominence with bold clear stand that there is no right to strike against the public safety by anybody anywhere anytime strikes over but career of Calvin Coolidge just begun he is Republican candidate for vice president of the United States in 1920 and with Warren Harding wins election first vice president to attend his Chiefs cabinet meetings he's well prepared for this [Music] Harding dies on 2nd of August 1923 Calvin Coolidge becomes his nation's 29th president with his wife he receives congratulations from his friends and neighbors he's warm beneath Stern exterior a popular executive no accidental president either in 1924 he heads Republican ticket and wins election on his own crowds cheer his inauguration and here one of the few speeches by our president famous says a man of few words [Music] thrifty New Englander he fashions an administration that cuts government spending Ward's off waste he's perfect president for the times and times are perfect too for Prosperity is not just around the corner but here and armies of workers are marching daily to ever-increasing jobs here is the busy market of New York Stock Exchange it's the era of prowess to Charles a Lindbergh leaps Atlantic and Coolidge gives his friend Lindy one of the nation's highest honors and honors come to Coolidge in South Dakota he's made Indian chief and says if coming election I do not choose to run in March 1929 he hands helm of the nation to fellow Republican Herbert Clark Hoover and retires to private life [Music] then January 5th 1933 in his North Hampton home he dies a stunned America mourns his sudden passing mrs. Coolidge and surviving son John attend the simple services but the sorrow is nationwide for Calvin Coolidge was not just president but a symbol of good feeling in a world that for a time was doing all
