Description: This black and white film is one of the episodes of "Yesterday's Newsreels", an early 1950s TV show made from the General Newsreel collection. It features seven segments of historic highlights. King Edward VIII Abdicates 1936 (:42-4:13). Shown are newspaper headlines, King Edward VIII reviewing his troops, and a photo of Wallis Simpson. He is shown in one of his early appearances in full military regalia and parts of a speech are heard. The crowds hold anti-abdication posters. His successor is his younger brother George VI, shown with Princess Elizabeth and sister Margaret. Live footage is shown of his abdication announcement, interspersed with people listening by radio. Lincoln Ellsworth Rescued in South Pole January 1934 (4:15-5:09) Ellsworth and his expedition crew have their equipment and skis on the ice. He is shown on the rescue ship Discovery after he and his pilot were stranded after the plane ran out of fuel. The crowds greet him at the dock. Personalities 1929 (5:11-6:10) Florence Trumbull weds John Coolidge, son of President Calvin Coolidge (5:11). Boxer Gene Tunney and his wife return from their honeymoon and announce his retirement (5:49). Aviation 1926 (6:11-7:44) The Army Air Service sends three pontoon-equipped biplanes 20,000 miles around South America. The New York, San Antonio, and Detroit are christened and take off (6:11). Inventor Fritz Von Opel tries out his rocket plane in Frankfurt, Germany. The first try is a failure and the second he gets off the ground (6:55). Bremen Crosses Atlantic in Record Time November 1934 (7:45-8:40) The SS Bremen ocean liner is shown both outside and with passengers inside. German Ambassador Friedrich von Prittwitz is shown. Fashions of the Day 1930 (8:42-10:07). Models at the Paris Fashion Show reveal the latest 1930s styles. The afternoon gown reaches almost to the ankles and the evening ensemble trails in back. Other dresses have belted waistlines and a deep v in the back. A velvet coat has a large fox fur collar and worn over a rose and black tulle dress with silver lame. Sports (10:09-12:15) The owners and jockeys are shown of the favorites. The bugle sounds for the 1923 Belmont Stakes. The race is shown, with Zev the winner (10:09). The Harmsworth Trophy is given to the nation winning the motorboat race. Miss America’s winning race is shown 1931(11:29).

[Music] television highlights are the news of yesteryear highlight of the news in 1936 is the application of Edward d8 King of England modders of the British Empire and word shown here of reviewing his troops culminates a storybook romance with announcement of his intention of giving up the throne to Wed Wallis Warfield Simpson american-born socialite George v King of England died January 20th 1936 with Britain morning its loss and hailing its new ruler the king is dead long live the king Edward the eighth forsaking his Prince of Wales title for the mantle of a monarch assumed official duties as head of the military but peace was in his heart wall through his reign in one of his early appearances before his people he declared humanity tries out for peace and the assurance of faith a speech for which he received an ovation from his subjects final act before the application was a visit by the ruler to the people of Wales where reports of poor conditions in the mines had been brought to his attention and then Britain hears rumors of the abdication crowds wait for an announcement from the Prime Minister making no secret of their sentiments where their king is concerned Stanley Baldwin Britain's Prime Minister leaves number 10 Downing Street with official word of the application the Duke of York shown here with his wife Princess Elizabeth and sister Margaret roles is to be the new English ruler and the first application in the history of britain is to be accepted with mingled emotions by England's people but there will be nothing uncertain about their loyalty to George the sixth and Elizabeth soon to be king and queen of the British Empire meanwhile all Britain waits for the official explanation of the abdication from Windsor Castle and on December 11th 1936 Edward prepares to make it radio links lands as the world tunes in and the moment for Edwards talk is here at Loyola I am able to say this was nothing I had to judge me entirely upon my stuff during these four days I had been coveted by Her Majesty my mother and by her by my family it may be some time before I return to my native land we all have the new king I wish him and his people [Music] it's January 1934 and help is on its way to rescue Explorer Lincoln Ellsworth and his party marooned on the ice when their plane cracked up Ellsworth who began his polar expeditions in 1925 had only a week supply of food when rescuers arrived but snow and ice proved no barrier to the rescue party and at Melbourne Australia crowds rush to meet the ship discovery bringing home an international hero Lincoln Ellsworth only man ever to span both polar regions [Music] it's 1929 it's plain bill connecticut and florence crumble weds john Coolidge the new mrs. Coolidge is the daughter of Connecticut's governor and the bridegroom the son of a former president of the United States the marriage is a high spot of the social season the bride and groom greet their guests as the expert adept and mrs. Coolidge senior look lon still 1929 and here are gene Tunney and his wife the former poly Lauder they returned from a European honeymoon with a heavyweight champion announcing his retirement from the Ring 19:26 and texas is the take-off territory as the Army Air Service plans a 20,000 mile tour around South America General Patrick chief of the air service looks on five Regular Army planes will participate including the New York the San Antonio and the Detroit the pontoon equipped biplanes prepared to take to the skies on the first long-range air expedition ever attempted 1929 Frankfurt Germany an inventor Fritz Von Opel tries out the first rocket plane run opals radical principle of rocket propulsion for flying ships gets its tryout today a gente flying of the future comes as Fon opals plane takes off what an early era and construction becomes apparent as the ship is unable to leave the ground [Music] a mistake corrected on the next attempt on opal flies a mile and a quarter at 100 miles an hour already successful in rocket driven automobiles Germany sets the stage for jet propulsion of the future with bond opals early experiment [Music] November 1934 and the Bremen is out to beat its own record for an Atlantic crossing rough seas prove no obstacle as the German ship steams through the ocean enroute from Cherbourg France to New York in June of 1933 the Bremen made a trip in seven days 17 hours and 14 minutes for the world's record as being set on this boys other ships are left far behind and Bremen captain Leopold Zagan buyer takes time out to hold youngest passenger Mildred Burnett five months old german ambassador von Prittwitz congratulate Commodore Nicholas Johnson who skippered the Bremen to a world's record four days 14 hours 27 minutes [Music] Peris the game sets Milady's style in the early 1930s as the Parisian fashion show brings out the latest in feminine attire the afternoon gown on the left reaches almost to the ankles the evening ensemble of gold and red LeMay touches the floor in front and trails it in back [Music] more evening gowns featuring the new higher waistline and a deep V in the back hmm girl has to have plenty of backbone to wear these creations [Music] afternoon party ensemble the black cram fan velvet coat is set off by a two-tone collar made of grey and white fox the Rose and black tulle dress is silver LeMay embroidered and be LeMay - jewel am a Belmont Park New York in 1923 and $100,000 goes today to the winner of a match race between the international horses save and papyrus Jokke Steve Donahue imported from England to ride for Pyrus girl sandy Zeb's Rider shown after the horse won the Kentucky Derby in England Ben Irish owner of papyrus awaits news with papyruses trainer that's all Jarvis the bugle summons the steeds and the horses walk to the wire there's a tense moment before the start and then they're off papyrus takes the lead early in the race but as they round the first turn Steve moves up on the inside and takes over at the far turn coming into the stretch it still Zeb in front with Donohue on papyrus going for the whip under Sandy's Master Hand Zev increases his lead to three lengths and as papyrus tires the lead is even greater as Zev flashes across the finish line the winner says money horse of the year 1931 and it's England versus America again this time in the Harmsworth Trophy race its quedan Driving Miss England the second and Garwood piloting Miss America the ninth over a 30 mile courts Miss America is in the lead with the English vote second trailed by gar woods brother in his craft the finish with wood speeding across the water to victory trained by several lengths miss England flashes across and meets disaster quedan is rescued as the capsized Miss England sinks [Music]
