[Music] [Music] television highlights are the news of yesteryear [Music] [Music] it's August 1939 and people of Poland are faced with more than mere threat of war in Warsaw even women are among civilian volunteers digging trenches in cities public parks power-crazed Adolf Hitler has demanded German control of free city of Danzig Poland's only Avenue to the sea but answer of Polish government is mobilization of army 60 divisions strong heading for German border they intend to fight Hitler without loaded weapons and spirit of free people who want to stay free on Baltic Sea Poland's fleet maneuvers into position to defend port of Danzig against Nazi attack by water outsized an out man by the Fuhrer x' feet of surface craft and underwater vessels the poles are nonetheless confident of victory if war should come remember these pictures their German propaganda films sent here in August 1939 to impress us with power of Nazi war machine and here are members of Hermann Goering 'he's banana Hitler here proves his boast of a new kind of war [Music] now a meaning of word blitzkrieg is clear as mobile artillery fires broadside after broadside into Poland shells sing over polish countryside beating drums of quick enemy defeat into Polish towns pummeled by bombing planes and shattered by shells Swift moving Nazi foot soldiers advance yard by cautious yard battered shaken stunned and stricken Polish troops fall back out man dubbed last outweighed but not once out [ __ ] then Warsaw heart and capital of Poland is staggered by steady stamps of explosive lightning from the sky after first few flurries of flesh resistance in the air not one polish plane is left to beat these Nazi bombers bang and these bombs burst not on any military objective but on an open and defenseless City by mid-september Poland is overrun but almost all resistance stops thousands are dead millions enslaved in less than one month the power of a Dolf Hitler's Frankenstein of war stuns the world and frightens Russia with Warsaw rekt at all Poland smoldering in utter ruin there are grave misgivings in most Moscow mines pattern of craters attest to accuracy if Nazi Bombardier 's wreckage everywhere is evidence of Hitler's warring might so shattered Poland is invaded from the east as powerful divisions of bread soldiers swarm across the land at fortress of brest-litovsk where Russian and German troops met on September 17 Poland is divided as the spoils of a despoiling war Warsaw surrendered September 27 now September 29th red and Nazi officers partitioned pulverized and plundered Poland westward 26 days ago both France and Great Britain went to war for Poland but German and Soviet armies march in triumph on polish soil after four weeks of victory that launched months and years of war [Music] here's inventor and innovator Paul burkhardt's latest creation a seagoing bicycles it's the early 1920s and burkhardt spike goes into New Jersey's Hackensack River for tests rudder is controlled by handlebars propeller by petals using waters of Hackensack for highway in Vetter Burkhart pedals his way over the waves well he claims his fancy bike is safe enough even for dome affair of 1920s oilman Sinclair has just been absolved of fraud charges in nation's capital he did however have to serve six months in jail for bribery senator for a day its 1921 that in Katers Ville Georgia 87 year old Rebecca Felton has been appointed u.s. senator from Georgia by state's governor unruffled by Hodder the agent Rebecca Felton goes about her daily work and play named a Senate seat for 24 hour period she holds office between death of state's most recent senator and election of his successor it's again 1921 and in Los Angeles young son of movie Idol Douglas Fairbanks comes
