Description: This black and white film is one of the episodes of "Yesterday's Newsreels", an early 1950s TV show made from the General Newsreel collection. It features nine segments of historic highlights. 1920 Presidential Nomination. Democrat delegates arrive in San Francisco for the 1920 convention to name a candidate to oppose Republican Warren G. Harding. Politician William Jennings Bryan and Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels attend. Members of the Women’s National League arrive in 1920s hats, coats, and dresses. James M. Cox is chosen as the Democratic candidate for President, and Franklin D. Roosevelt as his Vice-president as scenes of the flag-waving convention are panned (1934-2:54). First Water Ballet for America 1938. The Billy Rose water ballet stage production is shown at Cleveland, Ohio. Olympians and stars of Tarzan Eleanor Holm Jarrett and Johnny Weissmuller dive into the waters, followed by 100 synchronized swimmers. They form several water formations, shown from above, followed by a high dive finale (2:55-4:04). Fifty Destroyers Sent to Aid Britain 1941. The H-Class Fleet Destroyer HMS Hereward (H93) moves through the water. The US provided 50 Caldwell, Wickes, and Clemson class Navy destroyers as part of the 1940 Destroyers for Bases Agreement. The ships are refurbished and fitted with weapons (4:06-5:09). Personalities 1927. An elderly man smoking a cigar sits down to play the piano (5:11-5:37). Silent film actress Vilma Banky smiles for the camera (5:38-5:56). An elderly George Bernard Shaw visits the League of Nations in Geneva. He stands and yawns broadly (5:57-6:25). Freedom for the Philippines 1935-1946. Philippines President Manuel Quezon welcomes General MacArthur for the ceremonies marking independence. MacArthur is shown making a speech (6:27-7:48). Gale Rocks New York City 1928. The waves batter downtown Gotham. Pedestrians cross the streets fighting high winds. The ferry leans precariously trying to cross. The New York City skyline is shown from Governors Island (7:49-8:45). Aviation 1909-1912. 1909, Glen Curtiss makes history in his pusher biplane. 1910, the Martin-Handasyde 4B Dragonfly sets a time record. 1912, Frank Coffyn’s Hyro-Aeroplane takes motion picture video for the first time from an airplane. The actual footage is shown as the plane flies under the Brooklyn Bridge and approaches the Statue of Liberty (8:47-10:20). Fashions of the Day 1924. A fashion show is shown at the Municipal Opera Stadium in Saint Louis. Two giant peacocks form the stage décor. Models parade in a variety of midi-length 1924 dresses (10:22-10:56). Sports 1916. The Vanderbilt Cup race is held at Santa Monica. Driver Dtuio Nesta sets a new speed record in a Peugeot (10:58-11:33). 1927, Grand Slam champion Helen Wills is shown playing in a tennis match against England’s Betty Nuthall at Forest Hills (11:34-12:13).
