Word Wise: Compound Words

It was too late. The rapids, there was no turning back. They were a drift on the river of compound words. Chapter 37. Down the river of compound words, an official Word wise adventure. Last week, you'll remember Captain Wordwise and the brave [music] members of the National Word Watchers Expedition escaped from the monstrous giant Big Word by loading their rafts with supplies and rafting down the treacherous river of lost words. And now this week, we will follow [music] them down the treacherous river of compound words. Captain Wordwise is telling the [music] expedition members that during the trip they will be threatened many times by long words, but they don't need to fear them for they will only be compound words. He explains that a compound word is just two or more shorter words joined together like life jacket. The short words life and jacket can stand alone and each has a different meaning from the compound word life jacket. which incidentally must be worn for great danger lies ahead. Captain Wordwise also warns them that their only hope in getting down the river safely is to find all the compound words. As they pack their [music] supplies for the trip ahead, the expedition members begin at once to look for compound words, for they know if they miss even one, they will instantly be captured by giant big word. I'm packing my bed roll. That's a compound word. Bed and roll are the two short words that make bed roll. And this bag is waterproof. That's one, too. >> Good work, Word Watchers. >> And what about flashlight? >> Hooray. >> Now the supplies are carried to the rafts and strapped in tight for the dangerous trip ahead. As they start out on the river, the brave members continue to look anxiously about for more compound words. >> Shoreline. >> HOORAY. [screaming] >> Look at the hikers along the shore. >> And they each have a backpack. That's a compound word. Back and pack are the short words that can stand alone or we put together to make a longer word. >> Kim, that makes two for you. Oh, I see a compound word. Fisherman. >> Hooray for Steven. >> Hey, it's fun looking for compound words, but I hope we don't miss any. >> Be alert, Word Watchers. Oh, they face great danger. The expedition members are so busy getting each other wet, they may miss a compound word. >> Hey, I think we passed one. Hurry out of the raft to shore. >> Come on, I'll show you. Look, wildflower. Isn't that a compound word? >> Yes, because wild and flower are the two words that make wildflower. Michael, you saved our lives. >> Hooray for Michael. >> Suddenly, the expedition discovers a >> stairway. That's one. >> And stair steps. >> Hey, and upstairs. >> Outdoors. outside. >> Oh boy, look what's up here. A compound word we can eat. Blackberries. >> HOORAY. [screaming] >> What's this? I'm receiving a message on my secret Word Wise radio. It's from Captain Wordwise. He says, "Back to Raphs. Time running out. Must find all compound words. Hurry." >> Hey, Hillside. That's one. And what about mountaintop? >> HOORAY. >> LOOK, a waterfall. That's a compound word. It's made up of two short words, water and fall. Waterfall. >> Wow, we almost missed that one. >> But the alert word watchers haven't missed a compound word yet. And now the exhausted members of the expedition are stopping to rest and eat in preparation for the wild rapids ahead. They are so tired they can hardly move. Well, I guess one of them can. Well, I guess two of them can. Well, maybe a lot of them can. I'm hungry. It's lunchtime. Lunchtime is a compound word. Lunch and time are the two little words that join together to make lunchtime. >> What about silverware >> and jack knife? >> HOORAY. >> AH, the word watchers are at work again. >> Hey, I see a sleepy compound word. >> What do you mean? Nap time. A >> aha. I wonder what compound words will be found here. >> Pigtails. >> That's a good one. That compound word certainly has a different meaning from the two short words that make it. Pig and tails. >> Rubber band. >> Great. These word watchers are really sharp. >> Hey, suntan or sunburn. Say, we made two compound words by changing only the last part of the word. Suntan, sunburn. >> You're right. And how about sunshine, >> sunlight, >> and sunset? Giant big word is going to have trouble capturing this expedition. They're doing a fine job of joining short words to make [music] compound words. But now as they continue downstream. Oh, down. Oh, I got one, too. >> Oh, look. It's Professor Compound. >> It is indeed Professor Compound who in last week's adventure helped them escape from Giant Big Word and now tries to warn them that only seconds ahead are the first great fearful rapids. But it's too late. They're caught trapped in the rapids. There is no turning back. It was a terrifying experience, but they survived the first of the terrible rapids, and now they are celebrating. >> Happy birthday [music and singing] to you. >> Say birthday is a compound word. >> HOORAY. >> And now they prepare for bed. >> Popcorn. Another compound word. >> HOORAY. And now they prepare for bed [music and singing] at night. Compound [music and singing] words collecting words like fire. We know long [singing] words are [music] sometimes shorting down the river. [music and singing] Oh, there's nothing else we'd ra >> Hey, campfire is a compound word, too. >> And now it is bedtime. >> Bedtime. Another compound word. >> Good night. >> Hey, good night is one, too. >> Good night. H. And now it is morning and the brave expedition members eagerly continue their search for compound words. >> Breakfast. Camp stove. I'm eating a compound word. Pancake. Is that one? Sure. Pan and cake are the short words that can stand alone or be put together to make pancake. I found two compound words here. Dish pan, dish cloth. >> Hooray for Wendy. >> And now, the brave members of the National Word Watchers Expedition prepare to face their greatest danger yet in their escape from giant [music] Big Word. For just around the bend are the Great Rapids. The rapids no one has ever conquered in the history of water. Get ready. Hang on tight. >> Watch out. >> I dare not watch. It's too terrible. For here comes giant big word in a last desperate effort to catch them. Hurry. Will the expedition remember that compound words are just short words put together?
