Woody Woodchuck's Adventure (1960)

[Music] it is late winter father woodchuck is looking out from the doorway of his underground home all winter long he and Mrs woodchuck have been asleep waiting for spring in Spring everything comes to life again flickers nest in the old tree owls are out hunting and aasum looks for food among the branches a squirrel nibbles tender plants a frog enjoys the war sunshine and here's father woodchuck some call him a groundhog Below in their underground home mother woodchuck is waking her sleepy young family outside father makes sure that it's safe woodchucks have enemies this hungry Hawk would like a woodchuck for dinner it may be the hawk won't see father woodchuck but he's searching with Keen eyes for something to pounce upon better play safe no Hawk can reach the woodchucks under the ground away goes the hungry Hawk it may be safe now to bring the family out has the hawk [Music] gone yes it's all clear [Music] the woodchucks are very hungry after their long sleep the babies are very shy when they first come into the sunlight mother Chuck has to help there are many things to eat grass tender leaves Roots even so mother has to push the timid babies toward their food all about are Blades of grass and clover on every Bush are fresh green leaves and these are mother woodchuck's favorites look a battle for a piece of carrot father woodchuck has brought in how the babies fight over it hungry little Chucks can be be pretty rough little Woody one of the Chucks wanders away after all it should be easy to find something else to eat Woody likes to nibble grass and there's plenty to be had what's this is it another enemy it's only Michael out a walk in his father's Fields mother and Woody's brothers and sister have heard Michael and they move quietly back to their burrow Michael doesn't know about the woodchucks yet and Woody is much too busy to listen for signs of danger he's a hungry little woodchuck with much food to eat Michael and his dog Blackie often take long walks in the fields and the woods there are interesting things to see Michael and Blacky are coming close Michael sees little Woody now Woody has seen Michael he creeps away there goes Blackie what will happen now Blackie Waits Woody lies very still now he can stand it no longer Woody's hurrying back to his home away dashes Blackie quickly he catches up but what should he do [Music] now woodchucks have sharp teeth and they can fight better wait for Michael look out what a brave little woodchuck to jump right out at a big black dog away goes Woody to hide under a bush it would be fun to have a baby woodchuck for a pet careful Michael that's a safe way to take hold of a woodchuck now the long trip through the trees and on up to the house Blacky and mik happy little Woody very frightened Soon Michael has Woody's new home ready inside it he has put fresh dandelion leaves will Woody try to get out or will he eat the dandelions well Woody is a sensible little fellow after all his new home seems safe and what woodchuck can refuse crisp dandelion leaves Woody's strong front teeth are good for cutting or gnawing much like a beaver's teeth his claws are long and sharp good for digging his feet have soft pads on the bottom Michael is bringing something else for his new pet a bottle of milk why of course for a little Chuck like Woody is used to getting milk but from his mother just watch this Blackie perhaps the milk will make Woody feel much more at home do you think Woody is Happy back you go Woody oops here woody woody away he goes straight for his [Music] home Woody scoots home so quickly he frightens the whole family soon he has a big story to tell everybody late in summer Woody is fat and almost full grown he's making his own home home digging down in the soft Earth he tears the Earth with his teeth and pushes it back with his feet all the soil he loosens he must take up and Scatter outside the entrance it's a big job out of the burrow it flies Woody's new home will soon be finished here's a woodchuck's underground home the entrance under a tree or rock a tunnel down to the main room and to several smaller rooms and an opening into the field a back door for fresh air and protection Woody is clearing his tunnel there's a lot of soil to move and those hind legs keep busy pushing it out next he gathers leaves to line his underground room he keeps steadily at it for cold weather will soon be here some leaves are hard to pull off but Woody is determined so at last he has a big big mouthful of leaves here's the last step in getting ready for winter it's to close the tunnel that leads down to the big room Woody packs it with loose soil do you ever wonder how it is that animals seem to know just where to build their homes and how to make them snug and warm Autumn comes and leaves change color and fall nights are cold winter is coming the last entrance is closed now the freezing Winter Wind can't blow inside Woody's home is snug and warm he's ready for a long winter sleep the snow lies deep [Music] outside but down under the surface of the ground and all the other woodchucks are sleeping in their cozy leaf-lined homes they will not eat or go outside or even awaken until it's almost Springtime again
