Description: Explores materials used by artists in the past and in the present. Demonstrates the restoration of a Titian painting by means of X-ray, reflected light photography, cleaning, varnishing and retouching. Explains that while in the past the artist mixed his own paints, modern science has produced standardized colors which will make later restorations much simpler. Points out that new media such as plastics and metals will present special preservation problems of their own.
