Wild Science: Communicating With Animals

Duration: 11

Year Published: 1976

Creator: NBC EDUCATIONAL ENTERPRISES

Format: 16mm

Description: This film reports on two successful experiments that prove that animals can learn "language" and that interspecies communication is possible. Morgan, a 1,200 pound pilot whale, helps the Navy locate submarines and guides underwater search-and-retrieve teams. Lana, a three-year-old chimpanzee, constructs sentences on a computer to make requests for a glass of water or a TV show. What these experiments suggest about the subtleties of the animal mind and clues to the nature of human language are also explored.
