Where We Get Our Goods And Services (1967)

[music] [music] [music] Susie and her parents are new in this neighborhood. They don't [music] know the street. the neighbors, the children. [music] How can Suz's family get the goods and services it needs? Some services are brought to the home. >> [music] >> The gas company sends a man to turn on the gas. The electric company sends a man to turn on the electricity. [music] [bell] >> [music] [music] [music] >> The man from the telephone company provides another important service. [music] Something else brought to the home. Mail. A service provided by the federal government [music] for many goods and services. We go outside the home. [music] [music] Almost every neighborhood includes a shopping area. These privatelyowned [music] shops make a profit for their owners by selling the goods and services that people need [music] [music] at this shopping center. There are many kinds [music] of stores, places where goods are sold [music] and shops that provide services. [music] >> [music] >> Because Susie and her parents just moved into this neighborhood, they're shopping [music] right now for what they need most, food. [music] Supermarkets sell different kinds of food. Canned goods >> [music] >> Fresh vegetables and fruit, [music] breakfast cereals, and foods from many parts of the world. [music] The company that owns the supermarket sees to it that the people who work there do their jobs well. Each worker is paid a [music] wage. [music] The supermarket company pays for everything it hopes to sell. >> [music] [music] [bell] [music] >> It pays for [music] the refrigerators that keep meats fresh. [music] It pays for the rent of the store and for taxes and insurance. >> [music] >> The difference between all the money spent by the supermarket company and what it receives for the goods it sells is called profit. [music] Private businesses sell goods and services to make a profit. >> [music] [music] [music] >> Some people like to depend on their own skills. if they have them. [music] But in a large city, if you decide you need help, there's usually someone [music] who's expert at providing just the right goods or services that might be needed. [music] >> [music] [music] >> Suz's father feels that the money he pays this carpet Er [music] will be well spent. >> [music] [music] >> Yes, a city can provide everything a person needs, including new found friends.
