WHERE IT'S AT!

[Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] there oh [Music] he [Music] men and women going home Factory workers leaving their place of work for their place in life happens every day in many places this is Wolfsburg Germany [Music] men and women going to a meeting a business meeting these are the factory owners stockholders of one of the world's largest automobile makers most of the people who work in the plant own shares I'm there from the managers report to the annual meeting the men in charge of production report to the men who do the producing or how to be your boss's boss once a year there are investments and Investments when the hand which works the die press holds the stock certificate an annual meeting has a special reality they built all this together from the ground up the managers run the plant and the stockholders would tighten the bolts and inspect the chassis and install the engines and it has made a comfortable life which not so long ago only the specially privileged could enjoy electrician Carl shocker inspects automatic welding machines he has worked here steadily for 10 years 5 days a week 49 weeks a year with 3 weeks paid vacation and now at the age of 30 he gets nine additional paid holidays he was trained here his car was made here he met his wife here [Applause] beside Carl more than 60,000 other workers hundreds of skills together making hundreds of thousands of automobiles for sale and use around the world [Music] w [Applause] [Music] [Applause] nah [Music] [Applause] [Music] this is a different kind of assembly line merely feeding two shifts in a plant the size is an enormous job but merely feeding is not enough the food must be good tasting well prepared nourishing inexpensive and even that's not enough a man comes here from half a day at a hard job to take a break [Music] to eat all he wants at a price he can easily afford because the factory pays for most of the cost of each [Music] meal and he can digest the news along with his lunch [Applause] paying 60,000 people in this one plant alone figuring their wages and overtime is a big job in itself food clothing and shelter and something left over and what's left over means how you live here there's enough left over taxes deductions that is the same everywhere someone is always taking something out of your paycheck [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] are you sure the computer is always [Music] [Applause] right the game is soccer but the name of the game doesn't really matter it's just a reason to get together of the [Music] [Applause] [Music] of GL [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] the workers's hands are not used to being still here things have gotten down to routine like the respective percentages of Passenger cars versus commercial vehicles produced in the last fiscal year etc etc etc matters which invite the rapid attention of every stockholder and everyone thinks his thoughts which may or may not be those of management [Music] like just mail the dividend check this is Carl Shaker's wife when she met her husband Carl had just started as an apprentice and she was working full-time now with two children at home she just comes in part-time unlike a husband who works every day Mrs Shaker knows her job and it works out for everybody because the factory needs people like her to meet production [Music] [Applause] [Music] goals Italians too work here with their fondness and talent for cars and Motors they are drawn by good jobs a pleasant place to work a chance to learn enough pay to send some home [Music] Wolfsburg this town which was built by an automobile named its main street after Ferdinand Porsche the man who designed the original Volkswagen here's where the money goes out like on Main Streets everywhere in the [Music] world store and apartment stores display goods from all over the world even a Chic French Chapo no the supermarket is a supermarket in Topeka or Florence or here in Wolfsburg in this one you can eat your way around the world with stops in a 100 different countries exports pay for imports and everyone lives a little [Music] better twice a week there is the real old-fashioned Marketplace in front of the Town [Music] Hall the tomatoes come from Holland the apples are delicious never mind how it's spelled and there are eggs and poultry from Scandinavia [Music] and everywhere you shop they sell flowers to take home and home is where it all starts from and where each night it goes back to like the supermarket it doesn't look much different from one on the other side of the Atlantic [Applause] ideas and products are imported and exported everyone that takes part keeps what he [Applause] likes this is a town with a lot of history and a real 16th century Renaissance Castle which now houses a large artal [Music] a reconstructed medieval print shop which actually functions and a number of artists who for a time are guests of the [Music] town but Wolfsburg is also a very new town that started to grow along with the success of its famous product and it hasn't stopped growing yet it is hard to find a building around here more than 20 years old Renaissance castles are nice but central heating is nicer more and more people are getting their own homes financed in part by interest free loans the factory provides for its workers but most of them live in modern apartments conveniently located near the Factory [Music] nowadays when Mrs shocker does work in the factory she works on a different shift than her husband which gives her time to prepare dinner before he gets home [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] spee fore foreign spee culture and learning come in a box and out of it comes America's export to the 12y olds of the world the wild [Music] west management has had its say and the other side is now having theirs [Applause] a few hard words on behalf of a group of dissident stockholders about this year's dividend are the times that try men's [Applause] Souls time now for the eyes and N the proposition shell Management's method and accomplishments be approved and shall it be EMP powered to carry on for another year foreign [Music] the eyes have it for this [Music] one and that in effect means that a way of life has been approved for another year all over the world weekends have become a state of mind as they are in Wolfsburg [Music] be [Music] the new Wolfsburg has been carefully carved into the countryside bulldozers went around the forests not through them the builders learned from others mistakes to keep room for nature and for history unlike other cities Wolfsburg has refused to buy modernity at the price of Nature's Beauty even new Lakes are being built and yet there's room to spare for a church 7 centuries old Sunday is the day of rest [Music] [Music] [Applause] it's a time for dreaming and a time for loving and for other [Music] Hobbies a time for noise and a time for quiet and suddenly it's Monday morning men and women come to work and the job of making it all possible begins [Music] again that's where it's at here in Wolfsburg and everywhere [Music] oh
