Description: The Greater New York Fund presents this feature (:16); "What Makes a City Great." The Greater New York Fund is a pension program; a multi-layer employer benefit program whose pension provides retirement and personal benefits for eligible New Yorkers established in 1963. This film relays the various benefits the Greater New York Fund provides for its members through a series of cases including a deaf child receiving education with the help of the Greater New York Fund and the New York School for the Deaf as well as a disgruntled unguided youth receiving aide and direction through trade schooling. It is a Transfilm Production (:16). Aerial shots show the city of Manhattan (:35). Ground views watch New York pedestrians buzz for street shops (:44). The view runs down office buildings (:49). Kitty Kelly Shoes sell footwear off Park Avenue South (:54).  A 1941 De Soto taxi cab sits against the curb (:56). Corporate employees push in and out of corporate buildings (1:01). The first case features a father whose son lost his hearing. Patrick Kelly; a 35 year old building mason is introduced (1:13). He looks over photographs of his wife and five year old kid (1:24). He recalls a phone call from the past (1:43) during which he discovers his son is deaf.  Patrick and his neighbors meet through a counseling service (2:29). Their son learns (3:00) to read with a teacher at the New York School for the Deaf founded in 1817.  Mother and father watch over (3:51). He reminisces over aspects of the program made readily available to their family (4:06). Another case features a 25 year old salon employee, popular and engaged to be married (4:21). She unexpectedly falls ill from infantile Paralysis (polio). Cost of physical therapy is touched upon (5:21). She is able to return to work with ease and continue marriage plans (6:05). A photography apprentice; Joey works with blueprints (6:21) and a photo copier (6:41). Joey's dubious past is looked to; uncombed hair and dirty face sneer as his mother pesters him over calls from the truancy officer (7:07). A few weeks later; Joey's performance begins to improve following admission into a trade school (8:00). His coach notes an improvement in his basketball performance (8:09). It is noted the vocational agency effectively connected Joey to schooling and family counseling (8:20). Another case shows an employee’s recovery after a traffic related accident. Middle aged Benjamin Good (8:47); takes a call on a rotary phone. The film falls six years into Good's past (9:11). A cop bends over to identify Joey's injured and unconscious body following the accident. Surgeons (9:43) stand over Good's body. The IV drip bag hangs (9:51). The film begins to conclude as each case (10:17) is looked to again including support provided by the agencies. Pamphlets note over 423 agencies were spread over five boroughs (11:15). [Music] this is our time big the biggest great what makes a city great only you can answer that chances are you work in one of the Cities within the city in an office building whose workday population is bigger than many towns in [Music] America this is a closeup of such a building and of some of the people who work there 5 days a week any one of these people could be [Music] you you are Patrick Kelly age 35 occupation Building Maintenance you're an all-around man just name something you haven't tackled in this building you're crazy about your family sure why not a wonderful wife a fine boy David is almost five now but remember that telephone call from your wife 4 years ago [Music] remember yeah look m Molly darling take it easy now tell me just what happened I just got back from the hospital clinic that's what they said the baby's deaf oh Pat he'll never hear you'll never [Music] speak how could this ever happen to you Pat and you Molly this was the kind of grief that hit other people not you but now you had it where could you turn for [Music] help one of your neighbors told you about a family counseling service where you could go for help there you were told what you never expected to hear well let me assure you again Mrs Kelly that with patience and understanding and love David can have a really full and happy life and we have special schools here where you can send David where he can learn to understand well and to speak too what's that a not quite so loud bear what up bear what is that that's right just like you you're a boy you're a big boy what's that baby that's a baby baby two times and stop that's right baby that's right well who is this almost almost that's daddy almost Daddy just two times and stop Daddy Dad that's right first daddy dad there's your Daddy [Music] Dad yep he's wonderful Pat he's on his way because you received the vital help you needed a hospital clinic a family counseling service a school for the deaf you were fortunate there were these agencies of the greater New York fund you are Maria chelino age 25 a year ago you were on top of the world you were popular on the job and you were just about ready to announce your engagement [Music] I woke up feeling bad I thought it was nothing but the beginning of a cold so I took a couple of aspirin by the time I got to the shop my head was spinning one minute I had chills and and then it got blazing hot I I remember that I wanted to turn on the fan [Music] it wasn't a cold Maria it wasn't the grip you had infantile paralysis polio you weren't sure you would ever walk again re-educating damaged muscles is an expensive painstaking process that calls for courage and willpower beyond the imagination of those who never had to try it [Music] there was a wonderful thrill in discovering that you could do what seemed impossible but you realized that you couldn't do it alone you needed many others trained to help you every step of the way you were never alone Maria the you're going great did you notice that you're leading the league in total points yeah I noticed it on the boy they told me you're going to trade school yeah like it well I think it's great the chip fell off your shoulder Joey you found yourself you could build on that Foundation you learned a good trade a vocational agency found you a job and a family C help smooth out your home life too every hour of every day in this city there's help waiting if you're willing to help [Music] yourself you are Benjamin Gordon age 41 occupation executive everything's fine with you Ben Gordon but let's go back 6 months to a day in your life you'll never forget you're a commuter you were rushing to make your train at Grand Central when suddenly you are in another world what happened the car ran up over the curb and hit him I was walking along I saw the whole thing Benjamin a Gordon how about that he the sky all right stand back let him through what do you think doc we'll have to take them in pretty bad nobody knew you from Adam when you were lying on the street Ben Gordon nobody asked about your credit rating or where you lived you had some of the world's best medical skills waiting to help you when you needed them most you and thousands of your fellow commuters can be sure of this your commutation ticket is a passport to opportunity in this city of opportunity and you don't need a ticket to the emergency Wards of New York's hospitals and the many other agencies that exist to serve and help [Music] you Joey you could have been thrown into the discard to become a progressively hardened and dangerous enemy of society but now you're a useful citizen good luck and you Maria chelino were ready to count yourself out you thought you'd never walk never work again but there were agencies ready to help you at every step of your recovery you Pat Kelly thought your world had caved in until you and your wife found encouragement and watched your child respond to the skilled teachers at the school for the death just around the corner from wherever you work there are agencies ready and willing to help you over the rocky stretches of your life your contribution to the greater New York fund
