Shortages of trained doctors, nurses, and medical technicians across the nation result in long lines outside community health centers like this one in Palatka, Florida. The waiting room is jammed, but the children of these families are receiving the health care services they need thanks to the Army Reserve's 445th Medical Company in Gainesville. More than 100 medical specialists in the unit visit clinics in nearby towns. They assist public health officials in administering physicals to children from families who are unable to pay for private medical services. This year alone, the reservists have examined more than 6,000 youngsters. They've traveled hundreds of miles to bring their voluntary assistance to the communities that need them most. All of the youngsters get a good-tasting reward. And the Army reservist gets something even better. A new friend.
