Description: Produced by the City of Austin Public Information Department, this 1973 government film introduces Austinites to the newly created Austin Transit System, promoting the benefits of mass transportation as well as detailing hours of operation and expanded bus routes. A collaboration between city government and private business, the public transit system was managed under the City of Austin Department of Urban Transportation but operated by American Transit Corporation. Bus service began in January 1973 with a fleet of 55 buses and 107 drivers. Austin’s bus transportation is now provided by Capital Metro, which was created by voter referendum in 1985.
