for topics I was I was a thief I was a on my way to being a real badass you know it was radio when I was 16 and I got involved in radio are interested in radio again I think I figured at the time some of the stuff I was doing was pretty bad and I said gee I mean I didn't you know there's enough nothing violent or anything I said to myself if I don't it'll stop this I'm gonna probably wind up in big trouble so you know and I certainly won't get on the radio little did I know you say open line service or entertainment and I see my first reaction is to say yes thank you to both of them because it is service and it is entertainment at the same time you can't divorce the two you can put stimulation on top of that but but when it comes down to the final analysis it's got to be entertainment it I'm concerned about and I think for a great deal about I can't see government performing a role in film this will make a lot of people mad but I just can't see it this is a free market you make a movie you run it if it works fine if it doesn't work then are you going slash your throat government doesn't have a role in that that's not the public airwaves like broadcasting is that's somebody's piece of celluloid am I saying the right word celluloid that's somebody's piece of celluloid that's a private thing I was a fundamentalist Baptist preacher I was in radio 4 professionally for about 4 years and I got what I believed at the time to be quote unquote the call to the ministry so I'm the kind of guy that if I feel I have to do something and you know so I I did III I believed I had the call to go to the ministry so I quit radio went to seminary for four years got a degree in theology and what is the ministry for about five years and then eventually I began to change my thinking and all the stuff that I have been taught and what I had believed to be so in certain areas not in all areas because I'm not an atheist but I didn't agree with myself anymore so I stood up and I quit and went out to California for seven months to learn the movie business sold radio time to earn a living and came back to Windsor and started all over again and radio for the third time I think and that was in 78 so a lot of years here went by and specialized in open line and Here I am I've been doing open line for what 18 years 17 years now that's the story you come to me at a very high time at a very very joyful time because the the latest rating just came up and we're at number two position but very very close to number one I can taste it now I can feel it I can sense I can smell the blood of being number one the next rating starts at about a week from now and I think and believe that when that rating comes out we'll be number one which is the only thing that matters to me yes III more I I'm not religious that much obviously my more spiritual now than I've ever been when I was in the ministry because I had to learn that what happens in the ministry often times is that we we become like the Pharisees in the New Testament those of us that were in fundamentalism and we emphasize that the outward you know the rules you know that don't swear don't smoke don't drink don't gamble don't dance don't you know that that kind of stuff swagger whom I despised at one point and publicly condemned on the air in three different markets including this one has undergone a tremendous change since his his dalliance is in New Orleans motel rooms and I've been watching him the last couple of weeks and you know and I really disliked this man you know because he was a judgmental guy and he pointed the finger at Jimmy Baker and then went out to New Orleans the next Saturday night and you know picked up Deborah Murphy the hooker most days I have nothing to say you see the key to it is not what I have to say the key to it is being able to stimulate or revoke out of the caller something to say because what Wayne McClain thinks feels is irrelevant the only thing that matters is the caller getting from the caller that which the caller truly feels so I will say things like come on don't hold back tell me how you really feel are you sure that you feel that way that's the role not whether I sit and pontificate in front of anybody can do that but not everybody can get the caller to pontificate and that's what you want to do you see okay let me let me get you to focus on Sher Singh if I can which I think is important some people say and you've heard this so I'm not telling you anything new and though some people will probably call and say this this afternoon and that's okay they say some of them they want to change Canada they want to change our traditions and so on and so forth how do you respond to that kind of thing some people are sincere in saying that others are not as lofty in their motives but what do you say to them I presume that all of these demons are absolutely sincere because there's some validity to those concerns and I have no difficulty in accepting that she's been taking lessons I think well Wade mcclain show is on the air come on you know like don't even ask me that you know I could yeah if you sit down and you've got a group of people and a camera and a piece of film in a magazine what's the end product unless you're doing a documentary for a school mark your main goal is the bottom line as this going to play in Peoria is this gonna be the box office if it's not going to play in Peoria if you're not gonna show a net profit after recoupment then you're wasting your time and often that's what's happening here is the National Film Board or telefilm or whatever the heck it is they give you money nobody cares about whether you're gonna make money or lose money all they care about is give us the money give us the grant give us the tax dollars I'm sorry that's not what film is for film is to show a net increase on the bottom line from what you spent you spend a thousand dollars you make fifteen hundred dollars that's where it's at Jimmy for the first time in your goddamn life you're being what you're supposed to be and that's a preacher of the gospel instead of a you know a member of the Sanhedrin pointing fingers at other people you know and and he's saying things out like to the Pentecostals the Assemblies of God which is the denomination down there Pentecostals you know he's saying to the to the one line that really blew me away he says you know you people come here every week to church and that's fine and he says this is gonna be hard for you to take and you know Jimmy doesn't he just works that front row like the guy's a real master at it and he just you know he gets way up on the on the valley like he just gets hammered never what we need and then he comes down and he pulls the Mike in and he gets real close and he says you know it's gonna be hard for you to take and I don't believe in alcohol he said and I despised it but I'd rather see you people come in drunk rather see you come in drunk than to see you have an unforgiving spirit and a backbiting tongue and a gossiping tone and and and I said holy cow you know I'm saying to myself gee you know the guy's starting to understand have got to recognize that this is not an ego booster for me in any sense of the word so whether I'm white blue or indifferent to cut somebody off is only done for the sake of timing or dramatic effect with the accent on the words dramatic effect yeah I get a lot a lot of hate mail but that's normal though it goes with the territory some of it some of it's pretty vicious pretty vitriolic but through and the biggest house that money could buy it took me thirty three years to get the Cadillac but I got it don't ever stand in my way you know if I want something happy no no you know you see the ought to must never catch up with the what is because I'm already working on the next car now so as soon as you achieve one goal and it doesn't have to be a Cadillac and it doesn't have to be a
