Description: The industrial north didn't want the new capital in the south and the agricultural south didn't want it in the north, but men like Washington, Jefferson and Hamilton, convinced Congress to have the government on a marshy, semi-isolated site on the Potomac River. Major Pierre Charles L'Enfant drew up a magnificent plan and was fired within a year while trying to put his plan into effect. Describes how L'Enfant died in poverty never knowing that his dream was realised and that Washington today is the way he planned it.
