Part 1, U.S. troops are warmly greeted by Fr. town-folk. Nazi collaborationists are abused as they are marched through the streets. Abandoned Ger. clothing is salvaged by civilians. De Gaulle enters Chartres, and greets and then confers with Gens. Eisenhower and Koenig. Ger. prisoners are unloaded from trucks. Naval guns pound shore installations and landing craft goes ashore. Prisoners are herded along the beach. Brit. ships, including the Rodney, bombard a channel port; RAF pilots are pulled from the sea onto the Rodney; the Rodney and a Ger. battleship exchange fire. Tanks advance across a field, enter a town, and demolish buildings. Collaborationists are led from their hiding places. Ger. prisoners, one of whom is drunk, are questioned. Flamethrowing tanks advance; troops cross the Seine on a pontoon bridge; Fr. civilians and allied troops remove obstructions from roads. Allied troops are warmly greeted by civilians as they enter Paris. Part 2, Winston Churchill rides through an Italian town; troops cheer; Churchill autographs an artillery shell and then is driven away.
