Sandy. [Music] Candy. Sandy. Sandy. [Music] Sandy. Dandy. Sandy, come back. Sandy, no. Sandy, stop. Sandy, no. Andy, no. Tommy, Tommy, Tommy, wake up. Tommy, Tommy, wake up. Sandy, look out the truck. It's all right now. Everything's all right. It's just another bad dream. It's all right. Sandy ran out in the street between parked cars. I tried to stop her, but she doesn't know. That's one of the worst things you can do. Daddy told me. That's right, darling. And that's why Sandy got hurt. But we brought her home in time so Daddy could take her to the doctors. Mom, is Daddy going to be all right? Is she? Dr. Hayden is a fine veterinarian, and he's doing everything he can to help make Sandy better. Now you try and go back to sleep. Why do we have to move the city with all those trucks and big cars? It's a lot different than our home in the country. I know. That's why tomorrow two older boys from the school safety patrol will stop for you on the way to school. They'll teach you how to walk safely so you'll never make the same mistake Sandy did and get [Music] hurt. Okay. [Music] Hi there, young America. And that's all of you out there watching in school today. You city kids and west calling youngsters everywhere to walk safely. Walk safe. Here's one of the safest places to cross the street like Miss Lock cart there cuz those cars and trucks have to stop. She says stop and when it is safe, she signals. [Music] Good morning, Miss Lockheart. Hi there. This is Tommy Daily just moved in town. Hi, Tommy. Hi. Welcome to town. Now, you listen to what these boys say. you here cuz they're part of our school program teaching kids to walk safely and we're pretty proud of it. Bye bye have a nice day. And you know why we're so proud of it? Because they're teaching the smaller kids when and how to cross the street safely. You see, these drivers of the cars and trucks can't always see you. They have to watch out for other traffic. So, it's up to you to see them. Now, that boy's sister is in the school's patrol. She's teaching him to stop and look. She's also teaching him to listen. You hear that siren that says get off the street. [Music] Let the police car, fire truck, or ambulance go past and then take another look and then make your crossing. But lots of corners don't have guards or patrols to help you. Instead, there are traffic signals. Sometimes those signals have walk and don't walk lights like this. And some of them even have buttons to push. You press the button to tell the light you're waiting. They're waiting because the light is red. Red means stop. Don't walk. And that's what it says. Don't walk. There. A new green light. That means you go. But first, look all around you and listen just to be sure it's safe. That's the way to go. Those children have learned to cross by themselves the safe way. But most crossings don't have guards or lights to help you get to the other side, like this one. At a corner like this, you kids have to look for yourselves all around you and listen. Now, after you make sure the street is clear of cars and other vehicles in all directions, you can walk safely across and stay up with the others. Hey, little girl, look out. There's a motorbike. Watch out. That doll could have been the little girl. It could have been any child watching this picture. It could have been you. You see, streets are for cars and trucks and motorcycles and other vehicles. You children aren't very visible to those drivers. They can't always see you. And that's why you should always watch out for them whenever you cross the street. If you play or run out in the street, they'll knock you down. So, stop and search. Especially for cars that may turn in front of you. When you see them, be sure they see you before you cross. Out in the country, the roads are a lot different than city streets. Most of them don't even have sidewalks, but they do have a correct side for walking safely. Excuse me, Miss Lockart. Can I tell them about that? Cuz that's where I used to live out in the country. Try it, Tommy. Well, when the street or road has no sidewalk like this one, our teachers back home taught us always to walk facing the traffic. Then you can see cars coming at you from way off and their drivers can see you. Yes, that's right, Tommy. And one more thing, make sure you keep as far off the roadway as possible, like here. Walk with extra care on rainy days, too, because rain or an oil slick can make any street slippery. Night walking takes special care, too. So, to walk safely at night, wear something light colored the drivers can see, like the boy's white jacket, or carry a reflector or flashlight and wave it like that. Wave it so those night drivers can see you. Here's the place you'd say would be safest of all inside the school bus. And it is most of the time, but what happens when the doors open? Everybody wants out at once. Hey, hey, hey, hey. Now wait, wait. Just everybody quiet now. Now, now quiet. All right. Now, you exit one row at a time and be orderly. There we go. Now, come on. Now, that's the way. Very good. It's a lot smarter to be careful. A lot more fun than being hurt. That's nice and safe. Even your own mother's car isn't always safe if you jump out on the wrong side. No, no, wrong door. That's right. Get out on the sidewalk side because sidewalks are built for people so everybody can walk safely. Crosswalks are painted on the street to show you the best places to cross, but you still must be extra alert, like here. Now, a parked car can block your view. So, step out carefully where you can see past the parked car. Now you know it's safe. School's out. Time for play. But time to play safely. Debbie Alan. No. Hold it. Walk safely. Always stay inside the crosswalk until you've made it to the other side. That's good. Now that's the right way to get into a car on the sidewalk side. And buckle up those seat belts. Ride safely, too. That's the way to get home all in one piece. [Music] [Applause] Hey, look. Ice cream. Tommy. No. No. Hold it. Hold it. Get back. But I want an ice cream cone. Sunny, you must be new in this neighborhood. Nobody gets ice cream from this wagon who doesn't walk safely. Now join your friends, go to the corner, and cross safely. Now, I know you can't always cross at a painted crosswalk. Lots of corners don't have them. That's where you should be extra careful. Will it be a cone? Yes, please. Okay. There's your ice cream. There you go, fellas. That's a safe way. What do you have? A combined. That's the way you get a comb from this wagon. Thank you. Watch it. Look out. No, it's not funny. Too many of you kids have been hurt, even killed by looking at your ice cream instead of where you're walking. Let's do it safe. Okay. Bye. Bye-bye. All right. Now, what do you Tommy? Well, Tommy, what did you learn today? I learned how to walk safe. And what does that mean? It means you must always stop, look, and listen before you enter the street to be sure nothing can hurt you. If a street has no sidewalk, it means staying way over on the left side facing oncoming traffic. It means stopping when the sign says don't walk and wait for a new green light that says [Music] walk. It means always getting out of a car on the sidewalk side at night. It means wearing light color clothes or waving something bright means never playing near a busy street or trying to cross through traffic. This is not your best. Means playing safe like these kids where cars can't hurt you. But most of all, it means not dodging out in the street. That's the worst because drivers do not expect you and they can't see you like they did Sandy. [Applause] Tommy. Tommy, come here. Hey, Mom. Thanks a lot, you guys. See you tomorrow.
