Description: A German language film with English subtitles. Tells the story of the young social democrat politician Albert Loth, who studies conditions in a Silesian village that has become rich as coal is found in the region. Continues as he meets an old friend from student days, who, along with his wife, has become rich and also a drunk, and whose daughter Helene eventually falls in love with Loth. Concludes with Loth leaving Helene because she is the daughter of alcoholics, and with Helene taking her own life.
