volleyball is fun and any boy can develop enough skills to enable him to enjoy this active helpful sport the object of the game is to bat the ball across the net without holding catching or throwing it so that the ball falls within the boundaries of the opponent's court but in such a way that they cannot return it a game continues until one side has a lead of two points with a total score of 15 or more the official or tournament team under the rules of the United States volleyball association consists of six players three of whom play near the net and three near the backline the game is started by a player called the server who puts the ball in play from his service area the ball is then played until one side fails to return it within the court boundaries if this error is made by the side opposite the server the server side is credited with one point and he continues serving until his side has made an error when an error is made by the serving team no point is scored and they lose possession of the ball II upon gaining possession of the ball players change their position by rotation so that each may have his turn in serving volleying and spiking the new positions are held until the side has lost and regained the ball the underhand serve is best suited to the beginning player the serve should be made from a slightly crouched position the ball is held lightly in the hand with elbow straight about knee high or slightly above the serve may be made with either an open or closed hand one of the two most satisfactory serves is with the open hand the ball is struck with the palm and fingers the other most successful serve is made with the first two joints of the fingers loosely clenched and the thumb held close to the side of the hand the ball is struck with the heel of the hand and the knuckles of the first joints of the fingers the striking arm is held straight and is swung from the shoulder the hand should strike the back of the ball slightly below the center the ball is not dropped but is driven from the hand the server should remain behind the back line until the ball has been struck striking the ball too low drives it toward the ceiling striking it too high drives it into the net the overhand serve is sometimes used by advanced players it is fast and difficult to handle by the opposing team grills to develop skill in serving are both interesting and valuable to beginners this one is useful when large groups are participating here is a modification of the first drill except that it is setup for a smaller group where sufficient equipment is available if it is desired to test the players accuracy the court may be divided as shown and the player required to serve into the numbered sections by the instructor 6:1 [Music] it is just as necessary to be able to receive a well-directed service to deliver one if the ball is too low to get under and it must be played below test level the hams should be brought up word in a short sweeping motion to meet it when the return is made above the chest level the fingers are turned so that the ball may be played upward team play is most effective when the player who receives the service attempts to get the ball under control for his side and volleys to a teammate instead of playing the ball across the net a team may strike the ball as many as three times but an individual player may not strike it twice in succession when the ball is served each player must be in his own area after that he may cover any section of his own court for regular volleying however it violates the spirit of the game if one man attempts to monopolize the play striking the ball more than three times is an error and is ruled side out class drills to perfect volleying techniques can be as much fun as court play a dragon this drill may be varied to correct weaknesses observed in actual play i'm from the body on the fingertips up or the head you under get under my fire on the fingertips don't harm the ball be change directions keep them up up in the air up higher up higher back and forth across the circle keep up higher up on the fingertips up higher get under apply let's go what a fire here is a drill which serves as an excellent warm-up exercise spiking or killing the ball is the most spectacular and the surest point making play in the game swift coordinated teamwork sets the ball up for the kill the ball is received by a back he passes it high to a forward who sets it up for the kill the Spiker jumps into the air and strikes the ball sharply downward with an overhand motion another effective way of spiking is to get the fingers above the ball and drive it downward across the net with a quick snap of the wrist no player including the Spiker may touch or reach over the net nor shall his feet cross the center line just below the net to do so is side out or point this players leaped carries him to farm drills of this sort are useful in assuring practice in spiking for every player a team is on the defensive when the ball is in the opponent's court if the ball passes over the heads of the frontline players they should face immediately toward the rear to receive the ball from the backline a good defensive player drops to a crouching position with the feet apart and one foot advanced the upper part of the body should lean well forward the hand should be up with palms away from the face and with fingers extended his eyes should never leave the ball when the size and age of the group or the facilities do not permit the playing of the official game the size of the court size and weight of the ball height of the net and the rules followed can be modified to suit the abilities of any group from the sixth grade upward volleyball can be played with a large or small number of participants but proves most satisfactory with two teams of not less than five nor more than 16 each if there are five players on each side three take the net and to the backcourt when teams are composed of eight players each lines of three to three are effective when twelve to sixteen players are used they may be stationed for two a role if three limes are used the players move in the order of a reversed letter s the player who last served goes to number one position in the first line on each change in some cases with less mature pupils it is advisable to allow an extra trial without penalty if a fault is made on the first service other modifications and variations may be made to suit the needs of the group it's ready adaptability may impart a count for the universal appeal of volleyball as a school and recreational activity [Applause] [Applause]
