Description: A visit to the Portuguese island of Timor in the Malay archipelago illustrates how the people live and earn a living. There are no machines in the outlying areas and people live as they have for centuries. Crafts such as weaving, pottery, and metalwork are followed in traditional ways. Men fish with spears, and boys light bamboo flares to hunt shrimp with bow and arrows. Salt is evaporated from seawater. Buffalo play an important role, not only to cultivate rice paddies, but as a status symbol and ritual sacrifice.
