Features two research vessels of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography departing from La Jolla on a research expedition to measure the water properties of the Gulf of California, also called the 'VERMILION SEA' because of its occasional blooms of red plankton. Shows the hydrographic reconnaissance crew at work. Includes prevailing methods for obtaining hydrographic data such as water temperature, salinity and oxygen content.
