Description: Reviews R. A. Emerson's earlier genetic explanation of pericarp mutation which is revised to account for the two complementary types of mutants which appear simultaneously when medium variegated mutates. Shows that a medium variegated pericarp parent has about 10% offspring that are mutant. Presents details of the new genetic hypothesis for pericarp variegation which involves the transposition of a genetic element from one place in the genome to another. Indicates that this hypothesis may explain other cases of unstable alleles in maize and other organisms. Discusses transposable locus called Modulator and experiments revealing its properties. Lecture given by Dr. R. A. Brink.
