Public opinion in the civilized world has grown accustomed to fast scientific progress. Already the idea of Sputnik whirling through space has become accepted and people are saying what comes next what comes after Sputnik after Vanguard well the next step has been planned for a long time. It is a man satellite a space platform for human beings. Dr. Verna von Brown, former German rocket expert now working for the US Army, suggests this design for a man's satellite. The drawing shows a rock orbiting near the satellite with shuttles carrying cargo back and forth. The satellite itself spins like a wheel, so centrifugal force would give a sensation of weight and keep its inhabitants from floating loosely around inside. Other proposed designs are far different. After all, there's no need for such a smooth, streamlined exterior. There's no air resistance problem in space. One design even calls for an umbrellashaped satellite, a huge reflector gathering heat from the sun to provide power. But on one point, there is wide agreement. Any large space platform would have to be built in space from small segments sent up by rockets. This is a suggested space suit for the workmen who will assemble the small segments into the station. It's more like a one-man spaceship really than a suit. Tiny rockets at the top and bottom will maneuver it. Remote control hands like those used in atomic energy plants would hold the tools and fuel, air, and even food would be enclosed inside this working unit. One purpose for the satellite would be as a launching point for further exploration. This is a suggested spaceship design. It would travel under tiny acceleration, so it needn't be strong and lack of air resistance permits the clumsylook construction. This ship needs only a tiny rocket engine to travel between the planets. It's not designed to land anywhere. It would circle and observe either the moon or a planet and then return to the satellite station. Its crew and that of the satellite would have to return to Earth in a winged vehicle. Dr. Fon Brown suggests this design. The large wings would allow it to glide down slowly enough to avoid burning up from air friction. And Dr. on Brown reminds us that other things beside the crew can descend from a space satellite or platform. Guided missiles with atomic warheads, for instance, guided right to the target by observers in the space platform. And both Dr. Fon Brown and the Russians today seem to be in agreement that this kind of future is much closer than just the thinking stage. This is George Herman in Washington. that you had cited an object of very unusual proportion, size, and shape. Could you tell me a little bit something about this? Actually stopped and your radio actually stopped that. Well, uh, it was an egg-shaped oval phenomena. Uh, very solid looking and, uh, traversing at a terrific speed. uh coming from the Sacramento Mountains crossing Highway 54. Uh we f I first noticed our radio going out and then the automobile engine died and the other cars ahead of me uh were pulling off the highway. Six cars and all. Did this object glow in the sky? It did not glow. It did not glow. Uh, what color would you say it was then? I'd say it was a pearl color, like a pearl, light pearl, gray color. Take some more children to the schools. Is Is that a fact? Will you actually go to the school tomorrow to try to enter more children? I remember, however, being almost out down on the ground, it appeared to me that the Lord said to me, "No time to die. Get up. You must lead the army." And although I had been struck at least six time with the steel chain, I was able to get up with strength that came from above. Personally, I have no anger, no ill will. This is just one more precious installment on the fight for freedom. [Music] Where did you take off from as a final hop non-stop across the Pacific? Uh George Air Force Base, uh California. So you flew from George Air Force Base to Clarkville, Manila. Non-stop. That's right. And uh what do you think it proves? I think it proves that uh aircraft of the tactical air command can uh get anywhere in the world and uh do a job of fighting if they have to uh in a mighty short order. In its nose cone right now is a 3 and a/4 pound earth satellite which if all goes well will be orbiting around the earth in about 12 minutes time keeping company with Explorer 2, the Army satellite which was launched on January 31st. Now there's a vapor trail in the sky as the Vanguard has climbed up into the 40 and 50,000 foot limit and the bird is almost out of sight. Still climbing straight up. Everything apparently functioning perfectly. If all goes well, the first stage will fall off in just about a moment's time. The second stage will take over and propel the Vanguard up to about 2 to 300 miles in outer space. From that point, there will be a third stage firing with the nose cone horizontal to the Earth. If the ball goes well, then that tiny 3 and a/4lb ball will be in orbit. Now I can no longer see the vanguard. It's out of sight. It will be some moments before we know whether this shoot has been successful, but in its first stages, everything is going perfectly. That's the story from Cape Canaveral. Built for the Air Force in a record 9 months by Olan Mat Chemical Corporation. These miles of piping help manufacture a storeable liquid fuel that will power the Titan 2 missile. This control panel virtually runs the entire plant. Leading military and government figures attended the ceremony that heralded the official startup of the new plant. Hydrosine, an inorganic chemical fuel, can use a storeable oxidizer. This makes the Titan 2 ready for instant launching. Here, a Titan 1, the counterpart of Titan 2, leaves the launching pad for a successful flight into outer space. Right now, plans are underway for this rocket to power Dinosaur. That's Martin's boost glide vehicle that will send an astronaut into orbit. College campuses, which will be more crowded this fall because of record-breaking enrollments, will also be brighter than ever because outfits like this iceplitting blazing red corduroy jacket and short skirt over striped leotards will suit co-eds to a tea.
