USMC 112074 Decade 1950 Date 1950-12-01 Description In the Chosin Reservoir area, 3rd battalion, 5th Marines (3/5) prepare to leave Yudam-ni on December 1st as the lead element along the Main Supply Route (MSR). Filmed near the 5th Marine command post, it is a clear day with trash fires burning on both sides of the road. A number of the men wear bright red cloths around their necks. Civilians with baggage have assembled to the side of the road with livestock. An officer (without overcoat) can be seen wearing the green neckerchief of the Damnation Battalion. Dog Company tank (D23) starts forward and the crew waive at the camera. A C-119 drops supplies. A second sequence features the Koto-ri area. Heavy snow falls over the base, covering tents, trucks, and equipment. Dog Company tanks are parked with crews preparing them for movement. 105mm howitzers are deployed but not manned. The tanks continue to assemble on the road. Along a ridge line south of Koto-ri, 1st Battalion elements of the 7th Marines (1/7) take and search Chinese POWs, some wounded (this sequence dates to December 9). At the entrance of a building, one Chinese casualty lies dead. The Koto-ri material may be associated with History Division index card 1624-16 (1D-16-237).
