USMC 111920 Decade 1950 Date 1950-07 Description Staff Film Report #102. Review of the opening of the Korean War from June 24, 1950, and the subsequent United Nations authorizations for use of force. U.S. Airforce and U.S. Navy attempt to delay North Korean advances. Evacuees are airlifted from Kimpo to Japan while others arrive by boat and are processed by elements of the 24th Infantry Divisions (Army). South Korean forces struggle to regroup. North Korean POWs are held at Suwon railroad station. C-54's fly in supplies to Suwon airfield. General McArthur visits the airfield on June 29th as does President Syngman Rhee. U.S. Army ground forces (24th Infantry Division) in Japan prepare to be flown in. They arrive and move up to the front with South Koreans cheering them on. They enter combat, engaging tanks and taking the first American causalities of the war. The USS Philippine Sea (CV-47) prepares to deploy to the Seventh Fleet with jet aircraft being loaded onto the deck. In early July, the bulk of 24th Infantry Division boards transport ships in Japan.
