USMC 111481 Decade 1960 Date 1966-12 Description CH-46A's of HMM-135 fly in support of airframe recovery operation near Chu Lai. The downed CH-46 (piloted by LtCol W. W. Eldridge, Jr on December 5, 1966), is stripped of parts by maintenance crews flown in for the task. In February 1967, HMM-262 extracts Marines (carrying M14 rifles) from the field. In January an A-4 Skyhawk of MAG-12 is refueled (fragment). An unidentified Colonel with other pilots cuts a large cake (fragment). On January 24, 1967, Marines board CH-46 helicopters in the field. CH-46s land in a different location and offload Marines into combat while other Marines board. Ground sequences show Marines assembling in a field while a variety of helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft provide support. More CH-46s insert troops, some landing in column on a paved road. On January 31, 1967, CH-46s insert Marines onto open rice fields under fire. One helicopter signal with red smoke as it returns to the air. After another insertion, CH-46s land for refueling. Ends with brief shot of Change of Command ceremony for HMM-265.
