USMC 111252 Decade 1940 Date 1945-05-10 Description B-Company, 1st Marine Regiment clears caves on Okinawa with armor support, 6th Tank Battalion. Stretcher bearers carry wounded in the foreground. Marines struggle to rescue the crew of tank overturned in the mud and burning. A Marine sweeps the area for additional antitank mines. The tank explodes. Additional scenes show the charred remains of the tank after the fire has gone out. Other tanks continue to move forward in the background. Flame tanks support Marine infantry clearing caves in a rocky cliff side. Infantry advance through a village and a tank-dozer provides engineering support. The 6th Tanks on D+4. Marines speak with civilians while others work to extract a tank from a mine-cratered bridge. Views of same or similar locations where mines have disrupted roadbeds. On D+13, Col. Robert L. Denig, Jr. inspects damaged roads. Later he and others review maps. With the 22nd Marines, 6th Tanks assault hilly terrain under artillery fire (dated May 14th); the 22nd takes the ridge. on June 17th, C-Company of 6th Tanks uses logs to fill in cratered roadbeds. Views of Naha taken on the 18th with a close-up of a sign for the ""Longest Bailey [bridge] Built by the Marine Corps"" (C-Company, 6th Engineer Bn). 6th tanks with the 29th Marines assault toward a tree line with flame tanks. Followed by elevated views of the harbor area. 5th Marines engage in mopping up operations in a cane field on June 24th. POWs taken may be forced child fighters, Tekketsu Kinnōtai.
