USMC 110867 Decade 1950 Date 1959-05-28 Description In this ""Technical Film Report,"" the 1st Marines Expeditionary Force conducts an amphibious landing exercise demonstrating rapid deployment of an antiaircraft unit, dubbed Foothills 1-60, as part of Operation Twin Peaks, PHIBLEX 17-59. Loading operations entail Marines, with the help of Navy personnel, driving prime movers, twin missile carriers, and other vechicles aboard USS Polk County (LST-1084) and USS Russell County (LST-1090). An LCM pushes a temporary causeway onto the beach. Bulldozers anchor the causeway's cables on the beach and build a a sand ramp. Marines construct a wire mesh surface matting for the causeway. USS Tioga County (LST-1158) and USS Snohomish County (LST-1126) approach the causeway with the help of LCMs. Marines attach the ships to the causeway before vehicles are unloaded. Bulldozers and graders prepare the ground for a missile battery. Marines install a radar-guided antiaircraft missile system. Marines operate the system and fire its missiles.
