USMC 105426 Decade 1960 Date 1961-01-10 Description Multiple sequences of Operation AXLE GREASE (LANTPHIBEX 1-61) from January and February 1961 with the 4th Marine Expeditionary Brigade. In Morehead City, Marines load arresting gear and matting onto the USS Plymouth Rock (LSD-29) from LCU-1471. Marines use radio equipment and record information. On Vieques, Marines aboard the USS Boxer (LPH-4) load onto HRS-1 helicopters of HMM-264. HRS-1 helicopters take off from the USS Boxer. HRS-1 helicopters transport supplies and small vehicles. In the field, Marines travel via small vehicles and use communication equipment. Major General James P. Berkeley, an unidentified Major General, Lieutenant General Thomas A. Wornham, and unidentified Navy admirals chat aboard a ship. A HRS-1 of HMX-1 flies overhead. Unidentified Naval and Marine officers spectate and arrive on HRS-1 helicopters. Wornham, a Commodore of the British Royal Navy, and unidentified Marine officers chat. F-8s of VMJC-2 drop bombs and napalm on a hillside. F-8s fly in formation and sit parked on a runway.
