USMC 104674 Decade 1950 Date 1950-12 Description Marines march from Chosin to Hungnam, Korea following the entry of the PRC to the conflict. The frigid conditions contended by American soldiers while marching through the Northern parts of the Korean peninsula during the cold months. Marines, exhausted from traveling, sleep on the frozen ground. North Korean POWs captured by Americans are tended to. There's a shot of bare frozen feet. The movement and battle is represented with maps and animated diagrams. Combat footage features the use of M20 rocket launchers, M1 rifles, and 155mm howitzers. An F4U drops bombs and battles unseen North Korean forces in the valley below. A F9F takes off the USS Leyte (CV-32) followed by aerial footage. M26 tank is seen amongst Marines as they march. Planes provide air support to troops marching below. C119 planes drop supplies. AT6 and L19 planes land. Injured marines are loaded onto a C47 before takeoff. Naval artillery fire to shore. Sailors load and fire 16-inch/50 caliber Mark 7 naval guns. B29 planes fly in formation, dropping bombs below. South Korean troops and civilians flee, heading for American ships for the amphibious evacuation of Hungnam. A lone child cries. Several LSTs stand by, including the USS Greer County (LST-799) and USS La Moure County (LST-883). The port is destroyed following the evacuation.
