USMC 104664 Decade 1940 Date 1944-01-14 Description LtCol J.E. Weber (C.O. 1/7) holds plasma while corpsmen attend to a wounded Marine. 105mm Howitzers (11th Marines) fire a mission. Wounded are brought out of dense jungle and loaded onto transport. A heavy weapons company tends its equipment and displays a captured Japanese flag. A tracking shot from atop a vehicle in the surf shows Marine encampment at the water's edge. Aerial views show beachhead with a damaged wharf. More views show the airfield under repair and improvement as well as the 1st Marine Division cemetery recently laid out with two rows of graves. Marines improve defensive positions with barbed wire and heavy weapons. Marines take fire from Japanese positions located on Hill 660. They return fires with light machines guns and light armor. Col Julian N. Frisbie (C.O. 7th Marines) seeks cover. 7th Marines are relieved after 21 days of combat. Damaged landing craft piled ashore. A review of Japanese emplacements on Hill 660 overlooking Borgen Bay and then a Marine O.P. Survey of area include Japanese dead. Marines are shown moving off beach and onto transports.
