USMC 104663 Decade 1940 Date 1944-01 Description Combat footage of the campaign in the Marshall Islands. Several Marines affiliated with HQ Company, 24th Marines show items they've taken from the battlefield included a Japanese flag and sword--note the seabag stenciled for ""L. Pittman."" A civilian lies on a litter and is given some of their water to drink. A grave's registration team takes thumbprints from Marine dead and bury the remains in temporary a cemetery. General officers and others attend a Catholic service which is followed by the playing of taps and a three-volley salute. In the lead up to the invasion of Roi, planes fly overhead. Several officers have a discussion. Catholic Mass is held aboard ship. What appears to be Edsall-class destroyers float in the background. A marine observes the seas through a pair of binoculars before dictating to another with a radio. LVTs pull alongside the ship for marines in combat gear to be lowered via net. A large explosion rises over the island. Marines crawl up the beach. An injured man (not in uniform) is carried on a stretcher. Marines explore a destroyed airfield. Several soldiers take a moment to swim. Concrete installations and buildings burn. The opening sequence with the 24th Marines repeats at the end.
