USMC 104519 Decade 1950 Date 1955-02-16 Description FLight operation aboard the USS Coral Sea (CVA-43) with FJ2 Furies. Catapult officer gives the ""OK"" for FJ2 Fury to take off. Flight crew does inspection and maintenance on Fury. Takeoffs continue. A HUP helicopter takes off. Pre-flight inspection is performed on FJ2 jets preceding take off by flight crew. A pilot sits in his cockpit, readying himself for flight. Flight crew duck and watch takeoff from a safe distance. Capt. D.F. Durnford pilots a FJ2 Fury and prepares for flight. After direction from the aircraft handling officer, the FJ2 launches. Capt. Durnford lands and the flight deck crew rehooks the jet to the catapult. Pilot 1st Lt. P.K. Nielson readies for takeoff while catapult officer observes. He gives the signal, 1st Lt. Nielson salutes, and the FJ2 jet is launched. Another FJ2 returns to the hangar.
