USMC 103641 Decade 1940 Date 1947-07-12 Description Marines on leave in Trinidad in July, 1947. Marines and sailors visit a church and the beach. Marines drill on base. Marines visit the Royal Victoria Institute and see the famous Columbus Anchor. A sign accompanying the anchor reads, "The Columbus Anchor. Recovered near the sea at Icacos, Trinidad in 1877, this anchor is believed to have belonged to one of the caravels of Admiral Christopher Columbus who discovered the island on Tuesday, 31st of July, 1498. His son, D. Ferdinand Columbus reports the loss of the anchor in the Serpent's Mouth a few days later. This anchor was exhibited in Paris in 1878, in Caen and Madrid in 1892 and in Chicago in 1893". Marines inspect another anchor, with an accompanying sign that reads, "This anchor believed to belong to a Spanish war vessel, was brought to the surface on the anchor of one of his Majesty's vessels in February, 1942 and was presented to the Museum by Admiral Sir Michael Hodges, K.C.B..
