USMC 103408 Decade 1950 Date 1953 Description Camp Elmore in Norfolk, Virginia was dedicated in 1953 in honor of Marine PFC George W. Elmore, who was killed in action in the Korean War on February 26, 1951. Elmore served as an automatic rifleman in Company G, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Division, and was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross. Lieutenant General Graves B. Erskine speaks at a podium. Behind Erskine stands an unidentified Marine officer, female Marines, and Marines. Erskine and two female Marines escort the mother of PFC Elmore to a veiled sign that reads, "Camp Elmore". Erskine, a female Marine, and Elmore's mother unveil the sign. Elmore's mother places a wreath on the sign. The wreath has a red ribbon that reads, "Camp Elmore". Three Marine M.P.s march to the flag pole before the sign and raise the U.S. flag. The mother and family of Elmore look at the sign. The Marine Corps Band plays music. Civilians, Naval personnel, and Marines watch the dedication. Other legible text on the sign reads, "Dedicated to the memory of Private First Class George W. Elmore U.S. Marine Corps Reserve".
