USMC 100590 Decade 1960 Date 1961 Description Film documenting the development and establishment of South Vietnam's "Junk Navy" in 1961. A new initiative created from the union of the existing South Vietnamese Navy and the U.S. Navy, the "Junk Navy" would be a patrol force using traditional Vietnamese junk boats to stop other small civilian craft in order to search for Viet Cong agents entering South Vietnam by sea. Footage shows the patching and painting of old abandoned junk boats and the carving of new craft, as well as the training of crews by U.S. Navy servicemen in radio communications, signaling, small arm pistol shooting and on-board shooting with heavy artillery. Members of the "Junk Navy" in black traditional clothing, nicknamed the "Black Pajama Navy," are seen investigating a fishing junk boat and reviewing its occupants' ID cards. Location(s) Vietnam.
