USMC 100473 Decade 1960 Date 1968 Description This narrated film reports on the testing and development of an improved Fire Suppression System for Landing Vehicles Tracked in 1968. Narrated diagrams detail the destructive power of explosively induced gasoline fires in the troop compartments of LVTs, and the many proposed solutions. Live tests of explosions in LVTs depict successful tests of suppression system triggered by a wire grid in the LVTs hull. Demonstrations also show the response time of the release of an air and freon mixture. Multiple explosion tests also show the increased safety of foam-baffled fuel tanks. The film culminates in total system response tests, incorporating each of the preceding safety measures in tests at Camp Pendleton with the assistance of the West Coast Branch of the USMC Landing Force Development Center and the Base Explosive ordnance Disposal Team. The film's narration emphasizes how this successfully tested fire suppression system could be adapted for other LVTs and other combat vehicles to increase vehicle survivability.
