Below Pikees Peak in the forests of Colorado, 50 volunteers from across the United States will blaze eight new miles for hiking on the Colorado Trail. These families are testing the facilities in advance. First, they learn how to use a compass and a map. Their compass has a rectangular base plate for drawing straight lines. This volunteer conservation corps is a service of the National Hiking and Ski Touring Association. They'll set up a base camp and run backpack excursions from there, working 20 hours weekly for 2 weeks with the rest of that time at leisure. Families who answered the ad for volunteers said they welcome a chance to give to the environment. The pioneer spirit lives on.
