Up and Down the Autobahn, ca 1960

[Music] this is a promising start I must say stop signs in the shape of attractive blondes too bad there aren't more of them it takes a man of principle to drive past that sort of thing or one who's otherwise engaged hmm oh I haven't introduced myself yet have I I am a camera hello there you probably think that somebody has just left me here if you really want to know what's going on you'll have to use your imagination except the whole thing as a modern fairy tale right a camera on the Autobahn why not you're so nice to me I wonder if you'd care to give me a lift thanks a lot you're very kind oh but please no applause well then here I go with a friend and an assistant to take care of me already we're doing 60 to 70 on the Autobahn it's very well-maintained just the thing for all these beauties of chrome and steel no fooling Autobahn means 2,000 miles of wonderful Road [Music] this my friends is Limburg quaint and pleasant or as we say in Germany cutely with a magnificent Cathedral towering above it now that's what I like traveling on and on at anytime by day or by night 115 filling stations along the autobahns are feeding thirsty engines three cheers to anything that needs no chewing or biting prosit My dear sir our worst enemy is the vine louse and our best friend the wine [Music] and here is our old land River the Rhine forever young [Music] a this will be some vintage 1100 in something this Romanesque Church is still a little older wherever you look your eye meets witnesses to unforgettable history an asphalt cloverleaf to bring us good luck wherever we may go the Frankfort crossroads here's the spot where these steel races are being trained there's nothing faster except these silver Birds which come from all parts of the globe and land here hard by the autobahn safe and sound back to the Autobahn ah that's a beauty old Heidelberg I nearly lost my heart here Oh or rather my lens let's get out of it a university town famous since 1386 the spiritual home of the romanticists since the early 19th century [Music] change cars please oh just for once I'd like to relax on the luscious seats of such a sleek racer well off we go [Music] please don't stop yet I see I suppose we have to [Music] hey there I'm not an automobile you know take it easy that's it the height of comfort I must say outside they take care of your car and inside of your palette such pleasant guests from all parts of the world it seems let's have a closer look at these nice young people wan-soo is from paris and raves about the heat [Music] the senior eanes home is in Rome lucullus came from there too no wonder she appreciates good food buon appetito [Music] ah most tempting but not for drivers a day well cooled beer and you get hospitality spelled with a capital H and what does the boy from God's own country have to say I was in Lubec and got myself an O made of marzipan for the garden German got ins burger are the best in the world I wonder whether he took a wonder which model these two students from Munich are going to pick out oh look at that our monthly allowance like that would make me a student forever [Music] hey there I think I know you and you too this looks like a promising story my friends it starts on an evergreen meadow by the autobahn are two boys sporting instincts have been roused lookout pale faced Indians on the warpath [Music] that's a good idea a detour to nicole stott the dreamy little town in the old involved Hills [Music] you can reach practically any place in Germany by comfortable bus once on the road again you can also go bathing and just as stone's throw from the autobahn at that when you get tired you look for a place to rest your weary bones in a motel or an inn you're as comfortable as in your own bed at home [Music] incidentally we are now in the deep south of our country I bet at one time or another you did send something like that to your friends as a holiday greeting or just to make them envious look at me straight in the lens am i right only a picture postcard or nature can be that beautiful the German Alps considered a major attraction in international tourist circles this is springtime road in Garmisch fresque old houses both in upper bavaria your goal may be unique mainz/wiesbaden with off or Lubich friends trust the incorruptible eye of a camera germany is worth a trip come on and bring
