Description: This film from the 1960’s is an educational short which follows the story of two city kids who spend the summer on their Uncle Jim’s farm with their two cousins. The children learn about the animals as well as what daily farm work chores are like. It depicts the similarity between human’s as well as animal’s needs for healthy sustenance and clean-living spaces. It is presented by The National Dairy Council (:08) and was produced by Atlas Film Corporation (:24). The film opens with scenic shots of cows grazing in pasture on Jim’s farm (:32). His children are Andy and Jane and they are pictured by the swing set (:42). The pair is waiting for their Aunt Alice and Uncle Fred to arrive with their cousins; George and Betty, whom they will be spending the summer with (1:16). Andy and Jane take George and Betty on a tour of the farm after their parents have left and they begin with the cow barn (1:41). Their older brother, Bill is inside the barn dumping out food for the cows (1:50) and he tells the children that they eat special mixture of ground grain in addition to grass, hay or silage (1:58). Jim is readying the cows for milking (2:09) and begins to milk them shortly afterwards (2:19). Andy and Jane show their cousin’s a rope to play on in the barn although Andy is the only one that can climb the rope as he is the biggest of the group (3:22). Bill then takes the four around the farm to feed the animals (4:18) beginning with a new calf nursing from it’s mother (4:24). Once the calf is grown enough to drink milk from a pail, it will be Andy’s responsibility to feed the calf (4:38). Jane then shows Betty the baby lambs (5:05). In the pig pen, baby pigs come running for feeding time (5:43) and they are fed a mixture of milk and ground grains (5:51). Older pigs eat this as well as corn and various types of feed (5:57). The chicken coop is pointed to as they have shelter same as humans need (6:07) and they are fed grains and milk mixed with feed (6:15). The baby chicks are fed by Betty and Jane (6:28) while Andy and George feed and play with the puppies (6:37). Jane’s kittens that she is in charge of feeding are seen drinking milk (6:47). The supper bell on the farm is rung (7:10) and the children rush in to wash up before sitting before Aunt Helen’s prepared meal (7:21). Afterwards, the children get ready for bed as a good night’s sleep is necessary for children to grow healthy and strong (8:29). The kids spent the summer in this way; helping with chores around the farm, playing with their cousins, eating healthy food and growing stronger (8:54). Near the summers end, the corn stalks which were once only as high as George’s knee are now seen taller than the boy (9:19). Animals on the farm have also grown with the kids and they are shown in montage including the calf (9:29), the pigs (9:34) and the chickens (9:38). Aunt Alice and Uncle Fred return to pick up their children and the film concludes (10:01).

this is a story about Uncle Jim's dairy farm and the summer we spent there here are Andy and Jane who live on the farm although they often play here they're watching the road for a special reason today because they're expecting someone I could see the car yes they're expecting guests from the city Uncle Fred in and Alice and cousins George and Betty to visit them and this is a special visit after Uncle Fred and hand Alice returned to the city George and Betty are going to spend the summer with Jane and Andy on the farm first into the house to get settled now Andy and Jane show their city cousins the farm let's start with the cow barn it's an interesting place the cow barn is clean and airy his big brother Bill putting feeding for the cow bill what is this the Kazi there's a special mixture of ground grain for cows eat grass hay and silage to cause Lee good food to give you the milk you like so well George uncle jim is getting McColl's ready for milking do you wash the town sure let's keep them clean you see clean helpful milk comes only from clean healthy cows they must have good food plenty of clean fresh water and a clean comfortable place to live animals are like you they need good food a nice clean comfortable place to live in order to grow up and stay strong and healthy bill I'll finish up in here draw some made out of the cows William okay yeah come on gang let's go hang on tight are you in your hand ok George of course it can't work none of us can do it we're not big enough when we get as big as you are and it will be able to do that easy won't we right I guess you're right I am bigger than you are besides I do this every day almost sure the bigger and stronger you grow and the more you practice the more things you can do like feeding the animals that's what I'm gonna do now you want to help oh boy can we sure and soon you'll be big enough to do it all by yourself come on let's go oh here's the new calf and its mother it's only two days old but it knows where to find its dinner Andy will feed the calf when it is big enough to drink milk from a pale and eat other foods the cow which has grown up eats grain grass silage and hey to help her in making Miller she drinks lots of clean water we all need good food to grow and stay healthy but we better get on with a beating first Jane wants to show Betty the baby lamb these baby pigs are hungry perhaps that's why their manners aren't good baby pigs eat a mixture of milk and ground grains when they grow big enough they also eat corn and other kinds of peat grown up pigs eat pigs must have clean and comfortable houses and yards and room to play chickens to have a clean place to live leave grains and milk mixed with other feed Betty and Jane love to feed the baby chicks it's Andy's job to feed the puppies they're strong and healthy and happy he feeds them well and they play and sleep James kittens do too this one wants to go down and join the others at the pan of milk there's the supper bell the children was quickly because they're hungry and helen is a very good cook hmm look at all the good things to eat we all know that good food helps us grow bigger and stronger to be able to do more things and have more fun Jane is finishing her milk she wants more but she remembers to pour another glass first for Betty the children get ready for bed they're very sleepy this is the way the summer went with fun and play and work the children helped with the chores to care of Andy's Cal and helped aunt Helen they had good things to eat they grow bigger and stronger they worked and played in the fields and learned interesting things early in the summer the corn was only as high as George's knee but now near the end of summer the corn is taller than George corn grows fast Andy's calf is bigger see how the lambs have grown and the pigs really aren't babies anymore the little chicks are grown now the summer is over it's time for George and Betty to return to the city they've had a fine time and they've grown father is proud he can hardly believe that George is so strong betty has grown too I think milk at every meal now mother George Betty Jane and Andy have had a fine time and they've grown they've had play in the sunshine good sleep and plenty of milk and other good food
