Kevin Flynn is a leading software engineer formerly employed by the computer corporation ENCOM. Flynn attempts to hack into the mainframe system but is stopped by the MCP. Flynn and his girlfriend form a plan to break into the system and free the system. Flynn learns that the Master Control Program has expanded into a powerful virtual intelligence and has become power-hungry, illegally appropriating personal, business, and government programs.
