[Music] [Music] this is the story of airplane [Music] of guided missiles [Music] of space theater of over 95,000 people people of every conceivable Talent together they make up the largest aerospace company in the world The Boeing Company [Music] William Boeing founded the company in 1916 when he built his first to stick and wire airplane even while these planes were in production Boeing and his people were looking for better ways to manufacture aircraft giving the young company the faces of capability it has never lost a pioneer in a new industry Boeing foresaw the great potential of the airplane building trainers and flying boats for the United States during World War one at international mail planes in the early 1920s in 1948 Boeing introduced the first airline stewardesses to commercial air travelers on its model 80 a tri-motor by plain metal replaced fabric and wood when the company was producing the b9 in the early 1930s its planners were developing the p26 military pursuit the 247 commercial passenger and Mail plane and they renowned Boeing 314 from its infancy the company had two phases one for production one for thinking and dreaming about the future products and processes change and change again but the historic principle survives build for tomorrow [Music] plan for the day after tomorrow for example even before the b-17 was helping to win the war in Europe during the 1940s company engineers were developing a bomber with greater range and striking power the b-29 almost 4,000 b-29s dropped hundreds of thousands of tons of bombs on Asian targets and the two final missions atomic drops helped bring a sudden end to the war Boeing's first post-war commercial transport was the 72 ton double deck Strato Cruiser a spacious and luxurious airliner but even as it was demonstrating how pleasant peacetime air travel could be the company was helping to preserve the hard-won peace fighting and building the sea 97 military transport at the KC 97 tanker 2 team with a b-50 superfortress as America's most effective aerial arm of defense in the late forties then the b-47 first of the swept wing jet bombers an Air Force medium-range plane capable of carrying nuclear devices to any target the American paucity of maintaining a strong deterrent force to prevent war while working for a universal peace brought about the b-52 the Strategic Air commands 8 jet frontline of Defense giving the u.s. round-the-clock round-the-world protection meanwhile Boeing continued to spend its time and money meeting the changing nature of competition in the commercial market designing and building from company funds the 16 million dollar 707 prototype a single airplane that in one giant step brought the jet age to civilian travelers and air cargo customers all over the world and the kc-135 jet tanker transport the US Air Force teammate of the world circling b-52 the c-130 five of the military air transport service a troop carrier able to reach any spot on earth within a few hours even while the 707 was going through initial testing the transport division was planning the plane for intermediate ranges the 720 and even before the 720 was in production the company was developing the 727 short-range jetliner America's first free jet airliner [Music] increasing needs for civilian portal-to-portal service plus government and military requirements led bowing into helicopter manufacture in the 60s boeing vertol 107's went into commercial service in the United States in Japan Canadian Swedish in Thailand government soon ordered the helicopter meanwhile other virtuals were fighting the jungle war in Vietnam US Armed Forces chose the 107 and the largest Chinook as assault and rescue carriers the versatile verts all is at home on land on the sea or in the air since the end of World War two Boeing has been engaged in a continuing study of supersonic flight the then secret Brown to where pilotless aircraft program of the late important has set its own pace in scientific and technological progress by investing the majority of its profits back into new facilities and advanced research behind all the products are the people the increased emphasis on advanced technology is reflected in the changing employment patterns of the aerospace industry rising numbers of the industry's workforce are college graduates often those with advanced degrees the company encourages its people to broaden their educational and vocational horizons by participating in Boeing sponsored graduate study and all-power training programs all of this adds up to that indefinable something called management capability has its money faces the men behind the executive desks may look alike talk a lie but even to select their only true measure the only way to identify really good management is by the things they manage to accomplish at Boeing management has an impressive batting average from primitive airplanes of 1916 to the world's largest aerospace company of the sixties to accomplish so much in such a relatively small span of years requires the ultimate in planning ahead of every dollar of its profits during the past decade for example the company has invested 70 cents in its future what does the boy playing in the sand have to do with all this well in many way or Sir Isaac Newton who formulated and proved the law of gravity once said it I liken myself to a little boy playing by the seashore digging a small hole in the sand watching a little water trickled into it from the sea with a vast ocean of knowledge yet to be explored the late William Boeing echoed these sentiments two centuries later when he said I have tried to make the men around me feel as I do that we are embarked as pioneers upon a new science and industry in which our problems are so new and unusual that it behooves no one to dismiss any novel idea with the statement that it can't be done our job is to keep everlastingly at research and experiment to adapt our laboratory results and those of other laboratories to production as soon as possible to let no improvement in flying and flying equipment pass us by big and productive it is but this is a company managers scientists engineers workmen planning just beginning to explore the vast ocean of knowledge that exploration more than anything it made yesterday is this company's
